Cell Service in Custer State Park?

How is the cell service in Custer State Park? I will be staying at the Sylvan Lake Campground At CSP in June for a few days but will need to stay in touch with the world while I am there for business reasons. My cell service is with AT&T.
  • Verizon data and cell were good for us last year but it does depend on where you are at.
  • We also have AT&T.
When we were there a couple years ago, I only found one spot in Custer (the town - not the park) where I got four bars on my phone. It was in the middle of the parking lot for a place that sells rocks. Ten feet in any direction and we lost the signal.
Friends with Verizon had no problems connecting.
  • Sorry I don't know about Sylvan Lake specifically. We spent a week at CSP in April. Our last visit was two years before. Our cell service is with AT&T, and we couldn't believe how much better it was this year. I was taking photos and texting them and loading them to Facebook all over the park. Sure, there were places we had no service, but overall it worked very well.
  • with AT&T service is not. Verizon is usable pretty much throughout the park. I have worked in the park for the past 4 years and being in law enforcement am all over the park, am not sure about in the sylvan campground but i usually drive just outside the entrance gate and park with good service.
  • I was at Sylvan Lake campground 2 years ago, had Verizon and the phone calls I handled there were very clear. No data issues either.
  • We were at Blue Bell 1 1/2 years ago. I have Verizon and I don't recall any real issue with the service... ST
  • Like others have said: "Cell service in Custer S.P. is very spotty at best"

We have been joining camping friends from S.D, Colorado, and Iowa every year for the past 14 years at Custer S.P. every Fall. For cell phone service, with Verizon at least, we drive up to the area around the small airport on east end of the Wildlife Loop road for reasonable reception. Of course the campground in which we stay, Grace Coolidge, is closer to that area than the Sylvan Lake campground.

We sure hope they can get those destructive pine beetles under control. Those beetles are devastating large areas of the Black Hills and in the park.
  • 2 years ago we stayed at Sylvan Lake Lodge in one of the cabins. Service was very spotty-it depended on where you were in the area.

On edit: That was with AT&T.
