Considering New York City on May long weekend

Starting to plan a trip from Toronto to Pennsylvania. We will be visiting Hershey & Gettysburg as well as Washington. We will stay at Cherry Hill Park when we visit Washington. We are also considering going to Virginia Beach or New York City area over the long weekend. Looking at either Black Bear Campground or Newburgh KOA if we go to New York. Virginia Beach would likely be Holiday Travel Park.
I assume Virginia Beach will be extremely busy over the long weekend in May.
Will New York City be busy too or should we reconsider and visit another time?
  • Great information!! Thanks everyone. Wife and I are still talking about it. Friends of ours are staying at Liberty Harbor.
We're thinking about doing it a little later & maybe staying for a week or so we don't miss anything.
  • As someone said, no matter what time of year or what month you go to NYC it is going to be the same as any other time. If you are in Manhattan on a weekday it is busy with business people. If you are in on a weekend it tends to be a little slower. If you are come in the middle of tourist/vacation season - summer months mostly - it is busier than other times but then those that live in NYC leave at those times so it balances out. It may be harder to get theater tickets in the summer.

Liberty Harbor is your best choice to get in and out of the city quickly. You can sit on a commuter train from upstate for an hour or more if you go to Newburgh or even Long Island or you can take a New Jersey PATH train across the river and be in NYC in ten minutes.

Talk to the people at Liberty Harbor about the best route into their "campground" through the streets for a rig your size. It should not be a problem.
  • Newburgh KOA. They have a tour bus that leaves from the park. Pricey but well worth it in our opinion. Or you can drive to Beacon train station and take the train into the city.
  • Forget Black Bear. If you are doing a later trip check out Interlake in Rhinebeck NY. You can do the city by train on the Hudson line of the MTA and have a lot to see in the area like FDR and Vanderbilt homes and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park..Walkway over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie...Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome about 15 min from the campground, largest flying collection of wwI era planes in the world and air shows using those planes on weekends in june july and august. We live about10 min from Interlake...you won't be disappointed
  • We live about 1.5 hours from NYC and have many NYC second (or first?) homeowners. Often, those three day weekends when NYC folks take full advantage and come up for the long weekends... However, it is still a city and everyone doesn't leave....:B

NYC is not seasonal. It's always busy.
  • Thanks for the replies. We are considering Liberty Harbor but a little worried about driving into that area with a 36' 5th wheel. Wife & I were talking and may do New York City in a later trip so we can dedicate a little more time.
  • You might want to check out Liberty Harbor Marina and RV Park in Jersey City, New Jersey. It is a great location to use to visit New York City.
  • We stayed in the Newburgh KOA a few years ago when wanting to see NYC. They have a charter bus for traveling into the city - about an hour's ride. But, we had a great group and the tour guide was super. It was our first time to NYC - a great way to be introduced. The KOA was very accommodating with friendly staff, etc. NYC is always busy - so go and enjoy!!
