Well, my in laws just sold their snowbird home in Yuma at a major loss, lots of properties for sale there, it's definitely a buyers market. My in laws hated to sell but at the ages of 83 & 79 with one of them in the early stages of Dementia it was time. They had 20 Great Years going to Yuma every winter and made many friends. It's sad to see that the snowbird population is migrating a different direction. Their home was in the Foothills area. They started with a 36ft 5th wheel and ended with a double wide park model. Helping them get their place ready and listed was a very hard thing to do. You could see that they were very saddened to end this part of their life and move on to a new part of life with uncertainty of what's to come. They have a great family of children & grandchildren who love them and will give them the support they need, most of all they have God on their side as well.Please pray for them and pray for Grandma & strength for Grampa

Those changes in life are really difficult, especially when one gets older. Not looking forward to it at all. Prayers for an easy transition for both of them.

Property is only worth what someone else will pay for it. Sounds to me like they had many, many good years so how can that be seen as a 'major loss'? I would suggest that you focus on all of the good years they had and all of the memories they have made, the friends and family in their lives. Sounds like they are rich in the things that count.

You are correct about the depressed market in the Yuma area, especially the Foothills. Last count I saw this winter was 3000+ properties for sale in the Foothills alone, then add Yuma proper to that and yes, it is definitely a buyers market.

I would suggest that you focus on all of the good years they had and all of the memories they have made, the friends and family in their lives. Sounds like they are rich in the things that count.

Old age does not come without it's problems. However, we should all count our blessings if we make it that far in life. Many do not.

My mother used to say to my wife "......,don't ever get old" and my wife would reply "mom, I don't like the alternative".

They are worth what someone else is willing to pay for it, not what the owner thinks they should get for it. These folks had 20 yrs worth of enjoying warm winters, making great friends and great memories. Somethings money can't buy, so I'd say they are 'rich' in the things that count.

Yep, your right, they had 20 good years and yes they took a major loss, my wife & I are in real estate so I am no dummy as to a buyer or sellers market and grandpa was just glad to have the years in Yuma? BUT still at the end of the day the depressed market bites into the future
Money needed for future care of grandma. But they loved the years they had in Yuma.

Do you mean that after 20 years, they still sold for less than they purchased the property?

Be thankful they at least have something to sell. My uncle who just went into assisted living wintered for 20 years in Picacho Peak in his one time high end MH.

After 20 years the MH was a money pit that had no resale value. His funds were pretty much depleted at that point. He and his wife lived a very Spartan life in their northern home after that.

She passed away a few years ago with dementia. He could not afford home care, so he took care of her. It was not much of a life for him. He never complained, and would say that he was thankful for his winters in Arizona.

I'm sure there is a lesson in all of that.

If they did, I would think they paid way too high of price to begin with or the area became a ghetto over the last 20 years. :?
