Destination Black Hills with RV & ATV

We have finally achieved the setup we've been after, a flatbed truck to haul an ATV and pull our travel trailer at the same time. Been dreaming about a trip to the Black Hills to hit the trails directly from a campground. This is brand new ground for us. It's just the two of us, no kids, no pets. We prefer full hookups with 30A service, but even boondocking will work if necessary.

Does anyone have campground recommendations and/or favorite trail systems?

If your doing the trails on your Atv download the map app called avenzamaps. The owners of the campground we stayed at recommended it and it was awesome. Works without cell service ( don't ask me how, but he does surveying all over out there and said it was what he used). We could see on the phone if we went off the trail. Saved us a couple of wrong turns. The place we rented the ATV from said for $35 more he had an I pad with the trails on it. I told him we had that app, and he said that's what he used in his iPads that he rented.

We stayed at Mystic Hills Campground in 2011. Very friendly owners and willing to help you pick some trail loops matched to your style of riding.

Haven't been there since 2005 but the riding was great. Laws allow you to ride the roads so finding trails is easy. Coming from PA where they fly helicopters to try to catch ATVers, SD was a breath of fresh air and all of the restaurants, gas stations, and businesses welcome you rather than call the police on you. Enjoy! When we were there we did not have GPS so we got pretty lost. Trails are endless and beautiful. Pretty much, as long as it's not posted you can ride. Enjoy

Steel Wheel CG outside Deadwood is popular with ATV folks. Very well run campground in the mountains. Deadwood is nearby.

Get trail maps and info for trails from bhnf. Many private camps have access to the trails, get the info first, then choose a camp or boondock spot. PM me for ideas.
