Black Hills SD in october

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question but, how is the weather for camping/sight seeing in a class A motorhome in mid October?

  • OK, the weather doesn't look too bad next week. Can anyone recommend an RV park that they know will be open in mid October? Wifi and TV would be nice as it is going to be pretty cold at night.

Just spent a week at Rafter J Bar in Hill City. Huge, open, meadow-like areas between camping loops and plenty of space between neighbors. Quiet. Clean and well-maintained. Fine staff. Great experience. One night they shut off the water as a freeze alert precaution and reminded everyone to unhook their water spigot hoses. All was well.
Weather can change quickly this time of year in the Black Hills. You just need to come prepared.

Oh sure, you'll not be alone.
  • Lived in Rapid City for a few years - Oct is a month that should be mild and better than the summer heat or winter cold but you could get about anything.

  • We are currently in Custer State Park and it is a little warm. Last year we were here the first week in October and it was very nice. The weather can change rapidly so you can't really plan on anything other than it's a great place to visit. You just take your chances and go with the flow.
  • Should be a great experience! We camped there few years ago last week of Sept...beautiful colors, cool at night and near 70 during day a few times. As mentioned, you might hit a freeze or two or even snow.

Big plus...less crowds; minus...some things are closed but the parks are open.
  • Should be a beautiful time of year. Do go prepared for the worst, though. It's possible to get a fluke snowstorm.
  • Typical fall weather frost at night warming day times trees are in color. should be enjoyable
