Elite Resort of Salt Springs (FL)

Anyone stayed here recently or own a site there? Reviews are not good but date back to 2010. Everything I read on here is with regard to federal campground/recreational area. We have friends with old family home in Palatka that is being restored so thought would be close for a few days. Saw some very inexpensive sites for sale so wondered. Maybe part of the Central Florida slumps right now.
  • Most everyone we know bypasses Elite and heads across SR19 to Salt Springs Recreation Area. It was a private campground years back. Went into foreclosure at which time Uncle Sam took over since it was already in the Ocala National Forest. All RV sites and roads are paved, all have good voltage with 50 amp service and sewer. At $20 bucks a night, hard to beat. Yellow flys in the spring and mosquitoes all the time, oh, it's Florida after all.
  • If you want a more resort type park and don't mind driving a bit more, Wilderness RV Resorts at Silver Springs is nicer in my opinion. We had an electric problem at Elite Resorts. Salt Springs is the nicer of the 2 but in season hard to get into. Some nice parks in St Augustine too.
  • The NFS recreation area is a rare gem in the NFS system with FHU camping with a very nice park atmosphere plus the springs offer superb swimming and snorkeling. I have been through the Elite resorts and it is not for me.
  • Elite is rednecky. 100 ATVs on the week ends.
There are also some parks south of Palatka near San Mateo on the St. John's river.

That's putting it very nicely big guy (LOL).
  • Thanks all! Forget Elite!!! Lack of cell phone service in area becoming issue now...Ed will need to work a bit. Maybe we will drive down and stay in Palatka hotel. We have dogs so RV easier but can leave them home.

Cell service in past years had been spotty but last summer, we were able to use our Verizon air card and cell phones without any problem. While we couldn't verify, a local grocery store employee stated they had installed a tower south of Salt Springs. Cannot comment about the other carriers.
  • Just another recommendation for the Forest service campground. One of the best campgrounds I've been to. I don't remember how good the cell service was, but I know we had it.
  • Most reviews say "spotty" cell service and website says no cell service. Obviously depends on location since some of you have had good luck. We have Verizon wireless.Cell tower would certainly make a difference.
