Fires in Glacier National Park

My wife and I and another couple are planning to go to Glacier. Our first night would be September 10, 2015. We have reservations at Apgar.

What is the fire and smoke situation? the National Park website says there are three active fires the one on the east is mostly contained. it was updated September 2.

How about the Road to the Sun? is it open? That is a main reason to go having never been there before.

I would like to cancel the reservations and rearrange for a couple of nights earlier on our Yellowstone leg of the trip if the smoke and fires are going to present problems.

Thanks for any and all input.
  • We have been at the St. Mary KOA since 8/5 and most of that time the smoke has been heavy and almost continuous "unhealthy air quality" warnings - until the storm came though last Saturday. Since then the air has been clear for the most part with high winds earlier this week and rain all day today and a high of 44°. It's supposed to rain until Tuesday which is supposed to be bright and clear.

The Going to the Sun Road has been open all the way through the park since 8/7 but most of the trails off the east side of the road are closed due to the danger of falling trees in the burn area. The Reynolds Creek fire affected about six miles of the road on the east side.

Many Glacier is completely open and Two Medicine is open except for many of the trails around it.
