Hi all: We will be leaving Key West in mid-January heading slowly back north. We will spend a week at Flamingo campground in the Everglades but have not planned past that point. We have never been up the Gulf side of Florida and so I'm wondering if you all would recommend good places to stay. We are military, Good Sam and (soon-to-be) Escapee members but we'd really like to stay at State or National parks or BLM campgrounds. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! ๐
We often stay at Fort DeSoto at the foot of Tampa Bay, and highly recommnd it, but you should make reservations now. It is a Pinellas County park and cg with many waterfront sites, since it is situated on a batch of islands in the Gulf.
Pinellas County residents get a one month lead time when bookings open (six monts out for everybody else.) I just booked for February the earliest day I could, and most of the waterfront ones were scarce. Nice park regardless - beautiful beach and interesting old fort to tour.
A 2nd for Topsail Hill....also in that area, you cna't go too far wrong with Grayton and Henderson Beach State Parks either.
Definitely make reservations way ahead of time. We have to make them in November for the following April and even then we are down to a handful of sites.
