Fort McCallister SP or Skidaway Island SP for MLK Weekend

We've been to Skidaway Island and enjoyed it. However, at the time, there was no availability at Fort McCallister, so we didn't have a choice. Now, looking ahead to January, I have many options ;-)

For those who have been to both or just Fort McCallister, what's your opinion? I'm inclined to do Fort McCallister only because we haven't been there yet.

Looking forward to your thoughts...
  • The kids will definitely enjoy Ft Mac. Certain times of the year they also have docents and re-enactors. If you call the office number at the website below they can tell you if the re-enactors will be available. They also have a nice vid and photo gallery at their website.

  • We were at FM in June. Bugs were not as bad as expected, but we are from the South so used to some bugs anyway. Nice park. Fishing not great unless you have a boat. Enjoyed the park / wildlife. Never been to the other park mentioned.
  • Be sure to take the children to the reconstructed fort. It's very interesting to young and old.
  • It looks like Fort McCallister is the way to go. We have small children, so downtown Savananah isn't very appealing to us right now ;-) When were up there last time, we went to Tybee Island and weren't that impressed. Trouble is we live in FL and go to little (and big) beach towns all the time. No offense, but Tybee just seemed like a scaled down version of Daytona Beach, and very touristy and crowded.

fcooper: we have family that live in Richmond Hill, and last time were there we spent a good amount of time with them. Nice, quiet place. They're an Army family.
  • They're both nice state parks. Obviously, Skidaway is closer to historic Savannah and Tybee Island. If you're not going to be sightseeing in Savannah/Tybee, give Ft. MacAllister a try. If you bring a boat, they have a nice boat dock on the river.

  • Fort McAllister is more rustic. MLK would be the ideal time to go, as it is probably the only time it's bug free.

I would go to Ft McC just because it will be different. Both are great state parks.
  • F McA is out in the woods. SI is like being downtown in comparison.
