Ft McAllister Ga. Bugs and Fish and other stuff...

Headed that way in a week or so....wondering?

1- Anyone there now or very recent that can tell me how bad the no see ums and or mosquitoes are, or not?

2-Ideas on a place there or close by to take a small Grandson fishing. He is only 3 so fish size does not matter, it just needs to be an easy access place with lots of hungry little fish :)

3- Do the kayak rental places have life jackets for all age groups or just adults?

4-How early will they let you arrive and pick out your spot?

5- Any other advice?

Thanks in advance!!
  • Thanks fcooper....actually we already made the trip and it was nice. Bugs not bad at all, although we did use the DEET some. Nice campground and area, only disappointment was there is not place to swim there at the CG. Nice quite place though.
  • We live within 10 miles of Ft. McAllister and in a similar coastal environment. It's finally hot enough here that the sand gnat population has been reduced somewhat. They were fierce earlier in the spring. Bring your deet bug spray anyway.

I think you'll enjoy Ft. McAllister.

  • We were there in May, the biting bugs were out in full force. Couldn't have the doors or windows open the 4 days we where there. I called and asked what time we could arrive and they told us anytime because our sites were empty. I don't know anything about the fishing.

  • The noseeums will be tough on the little one. Ft McCallister is a great park for exploring our heritage
  • Thanks for the info on fishing. I live on NC coast so fully aware of biting insects in the summer months, just looking for some first hand recent experience if any is out there.

We have not been there in a couple of years, but you could fish off the dock at the boat launch area. Little Bluegills and Crackers. Sometimes real fish.. Use worms.

Double ditto. Ft M is a great place for kids. In summer we always keep a supply of child-safe bug spray and sun block in our RV. Biting insects are everywhere in the US/Canada, especially in summer. Call their office and get the current bug status & other info.

  • Raven, hope you enjoy your trip. Check their web site or call them for the direct questions. As far as biting bugs.......summer time in the south, expect them!
