Future trip to LA.

I live in Monroe NC. My wife and I plan to go to La. in spring of 2015. Thinking about the long way of going through Jacksonville Fl. and take I-10 west. Anyone have suggestions on campgrounds along the way West. Yes,I know this is the long way. I can't be in a hurry, I'm retired.:)
  • Crystal Beach is a little difficult to access. You can cross into Texas from Holly Beach but you must then go through Port Arthur, take Hwy 73 to I-10/Winnie and then follow Hwy 124 to Hwy 87 to Crystal Beach.

Hurricane wiped out the section of Hwy 87 from Port Arthur a number of years back and I don't think it will ever be rebuilt because of cost and wetlands. McFaddin Beach has been rebuilt since Rita/Ike and is open with new board walks, bird viewing and I believe camping is allowed on the beach.

darsben, I think the LA OP was referring to is Louisiana, since his screen name is Transplanted Cajun, so he is not likely to go to AZ or TX.

OP, be sure you check the Blue Angels schedule if you plan to stay around Pensacola. A couple of years ago, I was with my parents taking them on what turned out to be last big trip with their MH. Anyhow as we headed back to GA from Baton Rouge (near my mom's home town), we had planned to stop near Pensacola since there are a number of state and private parks in the area. We discovered as we crossed from MS, that the Blue Angels were having a night show that night, and there were no campsites anywhere near Pensacola. We ended up stopping in AL at some private park for the overnight.

There are several state parks in FL, that are very convenient to I10. Although they don't all have sewer sites, the dump stations aren't difficult and are right in the park. Unless your trip is going to be around Easter, you probably won't even need a reservation, but you can make one if you are concerned. FL State Park's link in Reserve America, shows several pictures of each site, so you can get a pretty good idea of what they are like. There are also a number of state parks near Jax and the beach if you are interested in them.

If you plan to stop and check other places out, I can provide comments on some places around Savannah also. Just let me know what you are looking for. Also where are you ended in LA? I have stayed a couple of places there that were pretty nice.

Scratch apache trail and Oatman but Holly beach in Louisiana will be nice and not to far over the border into Texas (no passport needed yet for US Citizens) is Crystal beach
  • We have stayed at http://rvparklouisiana.com
It has a secure gate and it right off I10 near Breaux bridge. There is freeway noise but it did lt didn't bother us that much. Restrooms are brand new and awesome!

  • What about stopping on the beach on Holly Beach, LA not on I10 but nice beach.
Also Crystal Beach, TX near Galveston, TX you can dry camp on the beach. You have to buy a $10.00 per year permit.
Also the Apache trail in the TONTO national forest near lake Roosevelt in Arizona is nice.
If your rig is short enough (usually under 30 feet) please try to visit Oatman, Az near Kingman, Az

Quartzite is very interesting that time of year; part freak show, circus, RV show and interesting places to eat.
  • When I travel I-10 I almost always stop at Buccaneer State Park in Waveland, MS. It was totally flattened by hurricanes awhile ago so everything is new and first rate. Many FHU sites, beach within walking distance, nearby casino (with great buffet) and more.

There are RR tracks nearby. The trains never bothered me but I know they do some.

Lots of great state parks in La.
