Glacier National Park

Anyone been around Glacier National Park? We are going to Hungry Horse in a week. Have read about the fires and wondering if anyone has been affected by them. I believe one fire is south and 2 are on the east side.
Any information would be great.
We are traveling to Missoula for Sat night and then on to Meadow Mountain Meadow RV park for a week.

  • Mountain Meadows is a great choice for a campground. we loved it.

    Agree 100%!
  • Mountain Meadows is a great choice for a campground. we loved it.
  • We are camped towards the Park just outside of Hungry Horse. There is some smoke, but I think it is coming from the fires in California.

Still lots of people in the Park and the whole Going-To-The-Sun road is open.
  • We are currently at the St. Mary/East Glacier KOA and there is quite a bit of smoke on the far east side of the park. The Going to the Sun Road is open all the way across from St. Mary to West Glacier but the trails to St Mary Falls and Virginia Falls are still closed. There are also some trails north of Two Medicine that are closed by the third fire that started last Sunday. I believe that the west side is still unaffected for the most part even though they had their own small fire last week. The park is still very crowded so it hasn't stopped many people!
  • We drove the Road-to-the-Sun today with our Silverado Dually clear to St. Mary. The western side is open without restrictions. The smoke is not too bad. However, the eastern slope is a different story. The smoke is so thick it makes it hard to see the mountains. You are not allowed to stop or pull over. There are still smoking trees not far from the road.
  • I was there many years ago. I think it was 1994 that they stopped letting 'oversized' vehicles over the pass. (I was there in 94). So there is a restriction of about 7' width, so no dually trucks. They do have a lot of tour buses going over the pass.

To bad if there are local fires, a lot of haze can prevent some good pictures.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
