- mgh122ExplorerYou're a little early, ST Patty's Day in Savannah not to be missed, stay at the Hardeeville CG in SC. Easy 10 minute drive over the bridge to down town.
- jnharleyExplorerWe visited Ft Pulaski several years ago and this fort was used in the filming of the movie "The Conspirator" about the Lincoln assassination and Mary Surratt. They were building the sets for the hanging scene while we were there. So watch the movie before you visit.
- Jim_ShoeExplorerWhen in Savannah, be sure to stop for a noontime meal at Mrs. Wilke's Boarding House. Everything is served family style at big round tables that hold 8 people. Strangers become friends over lunch. Southern Fried Chicken, all kinds of veggies and macaroni and cheese to die for. Just reach for a bowl, but keep one foot on the floor at all times. Wear loose clothes. :)
- WJeffBExplorerIf you are into WW2 history, The Mighty Eighth Army Air Force Museum in Pooler, just off I-95 just outside Savannah (you can see it from Interstate)- great place with restaurant inside-( my dad was in 8th during WW2.) Has inside and outside exhibits, etc.
- Red-RoverExplorerTwo years ago, last time I was in Savannah, they had a free street fair along the river walk once a month. We didn't know anything about it until we stumbled upon it. Had an artist do a characature drawing of the wife and I. Street car travel is free I believe. Lunch at Paula Deen's
Others here can verify? - garmpExplorer IIFt. Pulaski was great and extremely enjoyable. Glad we went to Tybee, just to say we've been there. That's about all I can say about that, but in all fairness we were rushed for time. Skidaway was our campground for a night and left nothing special for us, but it was under construction/repair when we were there.
- 3_dog_nightsExplorerJust left the area because of impending weather. Found Savannah to be a beautiful old town that has been taken over by tourisum. The most enjoyable aspect for us was walking around the downtown area looking at the homes and buildings.
Skidaway Island State Park - easily in the top 5 most beutiful campgrounds we've ever been in! Loved it! - DrbolaskyExplorerSavannah & Skidaway Island SP - you just made me insanely envious.
Savannah is on our list of places to which we'll return. Don't miss the Riverwalk area. Take a tour to see the incredible architecture of the old houses.
Go over to Tybee Island and eat at the Crab Shack. Our seafood platter was easily the size of one of the tires on our Toyota and it was listed in the menu as being a meal for two. Well, the THREE of us couldn't finish it.......
Enjoy & safe travels. - wanderingdawgsExplorerExcellent suggestions from the previous posts. Here's a few more.
Plan a day to visit Ft. Pulaski and explore Tybee Island. Walk on the beach, climb the Tybee Lighthouse, walk out on the pier, visit the Marine Science Center, and eat at the Crab Shack or one of the other many restaurants on Tybee.
There are many other interesting things to do in Savannah as well. The Georgia Railroad museum and Ships of the Sea Museum are interesting. Take a walk along River Street and watch the container ships coming into the port. Go to Leopold's Ice Cream shop for the best ice cream you have ever tasted.
Have fun! - Dandy_DanExplorerFort Pulaski is a nice place. They have a guided tour and they explain a lot about the events and happenings there. Both times we have been to Savannah we have taken the all day trolley pass. They will take you around town and tell about different historical sites. You can get off and check out the area then grab the next trolley coming and continue the tour.
A little ways past Fort Pulaski on the other side of the road is a place called the Crab Shack. If you are into seafood it is a neat place to eat. You need to watch for the sign along the road as it is back a stone lane off the road.
Good Luck and have a safe trip.
