Help! Where Should We Go?

First off, I am NOT the trip-planner-half of the GMandJM. I can count on one hand the number of RV trips I have planned and still have five digits left over.

But jHalf did such an awesome job of getting the MH ready to roll last week for the disappointing TTDNH (Trip That Did Not Happen) that I would still like to plan something and go somewhere (as a surprise).

Since this is the busiest part of the camping year around here, it's been especially difficult to find anyplace open for next weekend that isn't $108 a night (no, that isn't a typo).

Looking to stay within 200 - 250 miles of DC. FHU preferred/ 50a required since there's a cat involved. Easy access and big rig friendly a must.

Extra bonus points if it's close to an art museum (especially the ones in Philly).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help/Apologies in advance to that person who hates posts like this. ๐Ÿ™‚

Campground near the Biltmore Mansion. Mama Gerties Hideaway Campground is very very nice.

Harper's Ferry WV. Very interesting. We stayed at the KOA. Some sites are big rig friendly. You can check price and availability on the KOA website.
Luray KOA - Luray VA. Lots to see in the area.
Roanoke VA area is also nice. 2 museums in Roanoke. Lynchburg and Appomattox near enough for a drive. There is a KOA at Natural Bridge.

Thanks for all the suggestions, especially the one above that made me smile after a somewhat frustrating day on the phone. Many FULL campgrounds for next weekend.

I guess all the full campgrounds mean the economy is doing well - at least for GC owners. That's something anyway.

You're right, First Landing isn't available. I'll keep checking for cancellations during the week, even though it isn't FHU.

jHalf would LOVE going to Biltmore, but that's probably a little too far. Any recommendation for a CG near there for future reference?

Gettysburg is more my kind of thing....jHalf not so much.

West VA could be a possibility. Rocky Gap (MD) is close, but is there anything to do around there besides the casino?

Thanks again for the ideas!

Done the Biltmore in Asheville? Asheville is a great town with lots of culture and has some very nice parks to stay in. Check it out.

Or some mountain camping in WV? Or Blowing Rock NC?

Colonial Williamsburg/Monticello, Antietam battlefield, Hampton Roads. Do a Google search for `Virginia tourism' or put some other state in place of Virginia and see what the experts have to suggest for their area.

If you go to Norfolk, there is First Landing State Park. Was there about 6 years ago in March. But in the middle of the summer, it might be completely booked. It's a popular park.

Great idea!

Have been there and would love to go back. And jHalf wants to see DIA (Detroit Institute of Art) before it gets sold off to pay the city's debt.

It's over 500 miles from DC though. A little farther than I can go for just a week.

You got me thinking though: Portsmouth Shipyard and Norfolk? (We've done the while Jamestown-Williamsburg thing.)

How about The Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village? Definitely not your average destination.
