Hidden gem (Red Rock Canyon SP, Oklahoma)

Heading west to east on Route 66 and I-40 (generally speaking), we wanted to stay a few nights at Tinker AFB in Oklahoma City. When we called a few days ago, they said, "There's an air show here this weekend - don't come until next Tuesday." While looking for someplace nearby to spend a few days, I came across Red Rock Canyon State Park at Hinton, OK. What a beautiful little place! 100' red sandstone cliffs with rappelling areas, individual and group tent camping areas, and three RV camping areas - all beneath these beautiful cliffs in a lush, relatively flat little canyon. The ranger had locked up the office a little after noon and the sign on the door said to pick a spot and someone would be around to your campsite in the evening to collect the camping fees (and it happened just like that). As with many state parks, the RV sites are 30 amp and water only, but it's as beautiful and peaceful a place as we've ever stayed. Often, these little side trips are really worth it!

  • Besides finding some rather unique scenic features in the plains of OK, another real advantage to this place is it sits way down in the canyon, so when the winds are blowing across the plains, one is quite protected down in the canyon. A good overnight stop for those heading east or west on US 40. Well worth the 10 or 15 minute drive off the interstate.
  • Glad you enjoyed the place! I have camped there and I recommend it whenever I get a chance.
