Honeybear Campground, Boone, NC - Review

After hearing great things about Honeybear from a good friend we were finally able to get a site there this past weekend while on a wait list.

The Good:
-close proximity to the town of Boone, ASU, dining and Parkway
-nice wooded sites
-clean grounds and facilities
-safe and fun place for kids (they were everywhere!)
-nice little coffee shop

The Not So Good:
-reservations seemed a little disorganized
-sites are pretty close together and some are very small
-my site did not have a fire ring, was given flimsy portable pit

All in all, I would choose to stay here again but I'd have to be assured that the site I reserve is the one I end up on. About a week in advance of my arrival I received a call to let me know that I was being moved from where I had reserved to another site. Nothing I could do about it, it was happening. I was told my rig would fit easily.

We arrived and started the check-in process. There was a couple ahead of me, their check-in seemed strained and confused and took quite a while. My check-in went fine for the most part, there were some computer problems but they are upgrading that system after this season which is good as it looked and behaved like a very old piece of software.

Drove over to my site and immediately thought it was too small. While I would be able to fit the camper on it, getting it in there was fairly difficult. I had to ask the people across from me to move their car so I wouldn't hit it. They were very nice and moved it, helped me back in to site. Once on the site, leveling was fine. The problem was once I also put my truck on the site I was left with about a 12x12 sq. ft. area for the picnic table and fire ring. The fire ring was closer to both my truck and camper than I am comfortable with and as such we did not use it for anything but charcoal cooking. In the end, it worked out but I'd rather have had a little more space for the price of the site.

I will definitely go back here and hopefully get a larger site now that I know which ones to ask for. We went at a particularly crazy time of year (foliage, ASU football game, high school band competition) so we were lucky to get in here at all.

I would recommend this campground to anyone. Especially those with children.

Yes, there are not many "choice" sites and you really need to be on top of your backing-up skills.
