Nashville TN to Boone NC

In travelling from Nashville to Boone would you recommend I40 east to I77 north and enter Boone from the east, or take I40 to I81 north and then cut over to Boone through Elizabethton? We are pulling a 38' 5th wheel.
  • I usually come back or reverse it when going west, as bobkrogstie said, 40/81/19E/194/181/105. Scenic & shortest. Buy gas in Elizabethton,TN before crossing into NC (TN cheaper than NC). But best route if want all 4 lane roads is Terryallan's route, 40 to Hickory, 321 to Boone, easy.
  • OR. You could just run 40 to 321 in Hickory, and 321 to Boone. 321 out of Hickory is now 4 lane all the way up the mountain. A easy drive. They even straightened out some of the twistys.
You would be in Boone before you even got to I-77.

Consider using the BRP out of Asheville. I-40 to Asheville and then BRP to Boone. Not the fastest but more scenic. Looking at the map another option is I-40 to Morganton RT.64 to Lenoir, 321 into Boone from the south.

NO don't do this - a 5th wheel on this stretch of the Parkway this time of the year is not a good thing. If you want to see the Parkway, park the 5th wheel and use the Goldwing. You will be in the company of hundreds of other bikers.

Agree with this totally. I would do I-40 to I-81 to exit 19, in Abingdon, VA and down Rt 58 to Rt 91 and then to Rt 421.

We live about 45 miles away from Abingdon and we take our large church bus down to Boone each winter to go to the Operation Christmas Child facility. We have even driven back in the snow - not fun, but doable. Yes, there are mountains and curves, but Boone is located IN THE MOUNTAINS.

This route is about 20 minutes slower, but will be a much more enjoyable trip than the others.

  • I-40 to I-77 is the easiest/longest route, with interstate and 4 lane all the way. I-40 to I-81 is more challenging if you take US-19E out of Elizabethton to SR-194 to Newland then SR-181 to Linville then SR-105 into Boone. The most challenging is US-19E out of Elizabethton to US-321 out of Hampton which I did pulling my 40' 5ver. Lots of tight curves and hills. I opted for the 105/181/194/19E route back to Elizabethton.
