Ponderosa State Park in McCall - that's where I would go.

We were going to stay in McCall back in 2007, but forest fires around there made it impossible. We found a campground right on the river near Riggins, and it was beautiful (http://www.canyonpinesrv.com/). Not much shade, but we enjoyed our stay. Lots to explore around there, want to go back someday.

It's usually a good ten degrees cooler in the mountains near McCall than it is in the Boise or Lewiston areas. It gets much cooler in the evenings, too.

From Lewiston to Boise you're going to find extremely hot weather unless you stay north in Idaho.

Poison Creek campground at Cascade Lake State Park in Donnelly has full hookups (the only unit in the park that does), and is right on the lake. For a campground with more trees, the Ponderosa State Park "group" campground in McCall is good. It used to be a group only area, but they have totally redone the campground with hookups. The sign just says it is a group campground, but it isn't. That one is not right on the lake, but close.

Heyburn State Park near Plummer has water and electric hookups, but no sewer. There is a dump station on site, though. Lots of trees, near the lake and right on the Trail of the Couer d' Alenes bike/hike trail.

Hellsgate SP in Lewiston. Very nice park on the Snake. Plenty of shade trees. Bike trail through the park connects to the Lewiston/Clarkston bike trail system. Highly recommend this SP.
