Kananaskis Country Trip Report

Just got back from Kananaskis Country, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park Boulton Creek campground water power site.

We live in Helena MT and this area is about our favorite in North America. We can get here in 8 hours and it is wonderful. We got there last Saturday in the middle of smoke and you couldn't see any of the beautiful scenery. It rained that night and everything cleared out. Thank you mother nature. It was beautiful for the rest of the trip with the smoke only coming back partially by Wed. This area is like going to Glacier without the people but just as beautiful scenery.

The Albertans sure know how to make a campground also with big sites and spread out so you get privacy. Go look at their website as they have very nice pics of their campsites. https://reserve.albertaparks.ca/

You can do a day trip to Banff if you want to and need to check that box off but it is better to take the back road to Canmore and do the shops restaurants there and come back. Then maybe hit Kananaskis village for a meal if you want. Lots of trails including right off the campsite. The Dogs love it and everywhere is dog friendly. Then you can take the Smith-Dorrien Spray Trail that is a backdoor into Canmore. We stop at the Mt. Engadine Lodge that is basically out in the middle of nowhere, quiet and beautiful and we got four glasses of wine, a huge cheese meat plate for two with venison sausage, duck breast, cheeses AND a huge dessert plate with multiple desserts for like 76 bucks including tip, American. Go look at their website. https://www.mountengadine.com/

It is awesome but not cheap to stay there but staying includes all meals. So, stay at the campground and visit.. Sitting on their porch with a nice glass of wine and your sweetheart AND DOGS, will lower your blood pressure a bunch. Oh, bears, moose, etc. everywhere. Bring bear spray.

Oh no, here we go again about the bear spray thing. I always buy my bear spray in the U.S. and show it to customs and they've never had a problem. Just be sure it says bear spray, not mace.

I had just bought new spray at Costco here in Helena MT (2 for 40) and like you said, just told him and showed it still in the package/old one on my hip/pack and he waved us through. We went through Chief Mountain. I looked it up and like you said, it has to explicitly state it is for animal use and not humans. "Mace" is illegal up there.

Oh, we heard the story on the bear attack from the staff at the Engadine lodge. We use our old sprays to "practice" so we don't "fumble" when reaching for it. Shoot low... Oh, had a person at work camping a few weeks ago and a big black bear came up to the screen on her tent while she was backpacking. She fired on him and guess what? Even though most of the tent was screen, it still got her. She said her face burned for two days. Here in the states, I have three layers of defense when we go to certain areas. First is the boat horn, second is the bear spray and third is the gp100. Of course I am not sure if I would use the 357 on the bear or myself when it comes down to it. The latter might just cut to the chase and any bear that makes it through the first two I don't want to meet. My significant other primarily counts on the strategy of always hiking with someone slower than her. That would be me.

Just a note bear spray as sold in US is not legal in Canada as labelled. Buy in Canada for protection.
  • We are hoping to be there next week now that the smoke has gone. Nice report.

Spray Lakes from Tent Ridge, central Kananaskis country. (near where there was a recent grizzly bear incident.)

  • There is also a great bike trail leading up from the Kananaskis resort toward Peter Lougheed -- not steep, paved, astonishing scenery, great glide back down the hill.

Kananaskis is like banana -- easy to spell, but hard to know when to stop. ;)
  • Glad you enjoyed the trip through "our back yard!"

Yes it's a beautiful area there. Living nearby in Calgary offers us the opportunity to make many day trips through there and enjoy all that it has to offer.

We like to go to Tunnel Mountain in Banff for a few days, then explore from there.

Canmore has a lot of really nice shops and things, one of our faves too. The drive up through the mountains heading south out of Canmore is wonderful. A lot of gravel roads but well worth the drive.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.
