So we get our new RV next week and we're trying to figure out where to go on our first adventure! :B

We are in northern KY, right below Cincy, and would like to not go too far way on our first trek out. We would also love to be able to have a spot on the water. !!!

We also prefer a campground with full hookups.

Any ideas?

Thanks bunches! Jules

Caution re: Indiana
Their state park system is one that requires a sticker for entry into any park, whether for day use or camping. For non-IN residents (based on license plate) the annual fee is $60. Day use is $7 for out-of-state vehicles, but I don't know if that would cover an overnight campsite. These fees are in addition to the camping fees.

And even the annual sticker is only good for the *calendar* year of purchase. So If you buy one tomorrow, it will still only be valid till 12/31/14.

I second the suggestion for the Land Between the Lakes area. There are many campgrounds throughout the area and in both (KY and TN) states, as well as some COE campgrounds and a few National Forest campgrounds.

The Indiana entry fee for campers is a 1 time fee for the length of your stay and will get you into other Indiana state parks during the same time period.

We stayed at the Hillman Ferry campground at Land Between Lakes this summer, very nice and will probably go back next year.

WE were at both Lake Cumberland and Norris lake last year. Lake Cumberland is an older campground and not suitable for bigger rigs. In fact they warn you about going into some areas as you may not be able to turn around. Norris lake has two campgrounds and neither is on the water. One near dam is smaller and tighter and mostly stone, also road in is narrow and you would not want to meet anyone coming the other way. West Campground near park headquarters is bigger and sites are paved. BUT, road into it has some steep grades up and down and switch backs too.
We also stayed at Kentucky Dale Hollow state park near Burkesville, KY and I would consider it the BEST state park that I have ever been in. All the sides are paved and on a loop that has the camping spots fan out like a pinwheel, and they are extremely easy to use. Well maintained and in GRATE condition. Very large park and Dale Hollow lake is adjacent to park. Would not hesitate to go there again.

Also Burkesville does have full hookups available.

You might try Steamboat Bend. Its part of the Hamilton County Park system and is located on Kellogg Ave. six miles east of I-275 exit 71 on the Ohio side. A beautiful setting overlooking the Ohio River. W & E and a dump station. There is no CG host. you have to make reservations thru the park system and there is a one week minimum.
Nice and close for a shakedown.

We don't have a week, sadly. We will just be able to do maybe two weekends before winter hits.

We are from Independence, you must be close. We enjoy state parks and Corp of Engineer Parks.

These are a few of our favorites with Versailles and General Butler being about 50 minutes away. They both have lakes but sites arent really on the water. I guess a couple at Butler are but not many.

Feel free to PM me and I will let you know others we like since you are so close.

All the other campgrounds I listed above are on the water, whether it be a stream or lake or river

I'm going to look up the places that yall mentioned. I called two places down in TN, but they are completely sold out on weekends for the rest of the season. I forgot that Fall is big back here with the leaves changing color.

What size rig are you getting?

Loyston Point only has water and electric sites (no sewer at the site) but they do have a dump station. They do not take reservations so I wouldn't try on a weekend unless you arrive on Thursday. It's a TVA property. More info: http://www.tva.com/river/recreation/pdf/norris_rec_matrix.pdf

Woodalls says they have 30 amp electric and they close Oct 15th. Site length 40' gravel.

I usually look at the campground map, then check it out on www.googlemaps.com earth view and zoom in. That helps me pick a site. I would also call the office for assistance in choosing a site based on your needs.
have a great trip!

We got a 32' Class C.

There are two state parks in Kentucky which come to mind: Lake Cumberland State Park which is near Jamestown, KY and about 178 miles from Covington. We consider 178 miles a very easy trip. The other possibility is Barren River State Park near Glasgow, KY-- about 70 miles further from Covington. We have stayed at Barren River, not at Cumberland State Park. The RV Park in Barren River is not on the lakeshore. I don't know ab out Cumberland State Park, but both are on nice lakes.

While I'm at it, I will mention a couple of other possibilities. There are many good RV parks on Land Between the Lakes (about 290 miles from Covington). We have stayed at Kentucky Dam Village State Park, but there are many other private and public campgrounds in this area.

A bit further away is Pin Oak Campground in the Natchez Trace State Park in Tennessee. There are campsites on the lake in that park. It would be about 370 miles from Covington. We have stayed in this nice state park in Tennessee.

...and while I'm thinking of it, there's always Hocking Hills to the East of you, in Ohio. Really scenic area, and there is a KOA there that might be an attractive option for you.

Might also check out Brookville Reservoir In Indiana. It's a couple of hours away from you, and I do know that the Mounds SRA has full hookup sites. Whitewater state park in the same area is a great park with large sites, but no full hookups... electric only, I believe.
