Lake Dorr / Ocala

Wife and I loaded the Jeep up today with the dog and snacks and headed over to Ocala. The weather was great, sunny, dark blue skies and upper 60s? We explored the eastern area of ONF and drove through the Lake Dorr campground.

The camping area seemed full (maybe 30 sites) with two large DPs, several class Cs, numerours FWs and TTs. Two or three tenters, and a young couple who may have been camping out of their van.

It is a single loop area, water only, with a bath house in the center.

The campground is within walking distance of the lake where there is a boat ramp.

Anyway, it seems like a clean, quite area with a price of $12.00 per night.
  • I was in a jeep club for a little bit and we would stay at Rodman campground, part of the state parks.. (northern part of Ocala national forest) spend all day off roading all over the forest. Great fun and very nice surroundings ..
  • Looking forward to meeting you one day Gypsy! We have out of state plans in March (non camping) and then a four day weekend in April at Wekiva. Maybe the wife and I will shoot for SS in June.

Agreed, always good to beware of your surroundings. Gypsy, this campground is right off of Hwy 17 approx. 3 or 4 miles north of Altoona. It had a camp host, and a entrance / exit building (unoccupied) while I was there.

I've been told of the "woods people" and I've read some stories of them. I picked up a Jeep last year and my dog and I have driven the Forrest roads numerous times, and have yet to "meet" any problem people. That's a vast area of isolation out there and I don't think I would camp alone in any isolated areas. I need hookups......AC / Heat.....haha.

However, there are some beautiful areas to be explored, and I refuse to allow a few knuckle heads to interfer with my Jeep rides!

X2, I love the ONF and have driven many a road north of SR 40 out there and visited every CG I can find. Some very beautiful places. These were the only undesirables I have encountered in my journeys there. These clowns were obviously homesteading in a remote CG and decided to block my exit after I rode in. I laid both of my.38SP permits on the dash and they decided they would let me pass back out. At some point we will cross paths at SS. I will be there Memorial Day weekend, the week of June 9 and the week of July 6. See you at the springs

  • I have driven through all the developed and undeveloped camping areas in the ONF and many are great but as you pointed out have very few amenities. Lake Dorr was picturesque. The remote camping areas in the ONF require some caution as you may find undesirable vagrants in some. Had a close encounter in one of them but the vagrants chose to let me pass unmolested after I showed them my "S&W passes"
