Lake George New York

We're planning on going to NY in July and staying at Lake George RV Resort. Any suggestions on which sites are best? Our MH is 30' and DW likes full hook ups. I'm a history buff so what are the historical locations in the area and how far is it to the Canadian border in case we want to run up there?

For the uneducated I assure you New York is far from a pile of concrete with millions of people running in all directions. The mountains are awe inspiring, the forests are breath-taking, the streams and rivers a fisherman's paradise and from what I observed if you want to have a lot of fun with freedom of movement, stay in the Adirondacks for a while.

Excellent report. Thank You for visiting New York, please spread
the word to your friends about what we have to offer.
I am amazed at the number of people who think that NY is nothing but a city, while in reality the city is one tiny corner of a vast and varied state.
Once again I thank you.

We're back and like the previous posters said; Lake George is great. Here's a rundown of our activities: being an old history teacher (but only for a short time) I've always had a keen interest in military history, so visiting Ticonderoga, Crown Point, Ft Wm. Henry, Ft. Edward and the like was a special treat for this old man. DW fell in love with Saratoga Springs and our grandson filled every empty container we had and brought them back to Kentucky with him. The grandson also got his first ferry ride across to Vermont at the Ticonderoga ferry so history was made. We took a boat tour of LG and I'm still trying to figure out which house belonged to the late Andy Rooney since the guide mentioned it but couldn't point it out. I found the lake islands fascinating with the houses on some and only camping/picnicking allowed on others. We even had a chance to go up to Lake Champlain and try to spot Champ but had no luck. Noticed a huge group of people in four different lines running to the street at a local ice cream shop and discovered Martha's. Some of the best ice cream I've ever had and they don't scrimp on the size of the servings either. I should have brought our bikes because the trails available run forever as the grandson reminded me repeatedly. I should also have brought our golf kart because the place is just too large to walk through even though DW and I walked our little pug Putter over as much of the campground as we could. Must commend the staff in the office for their manners, courtesy, appearance and professionalism. I was in the office only a few times during the week but could not help notice how polite they were to each new camper as they checked in or had questions, etc. A final word on the restaurants to only say the food is excellent, the service good and the prices while "not cheap" are reasonable for the fare. Had the best fish and chips ever at the Boardwalk Restaurant and you park in their lot for free. Parking is a pain in the neck as they have every square in of LG metered or privately controlled/priced and you will be ticketed if you violate same. We took several drives through the countryside on state/county roads and I was constantly struck by the awesome beauty of the area most particularly the extraordinarily tall trees in the Adirondacks along with the creeks and streams. Finally we could have used another week to do the other things we could have so when you go plan accordingly. You won't be sorry.

This is a great campground. We were there last July and we will be there again this July, over the 4th for ten days.

One place we love to go is the Painted Pony Rodeo.. It is such a great time, we went twice and would have gone a third time if we had the chance.

Edit: Sorry, I just checked the rodeo schedule and it won't be open during the time you'll be at Lake George. Oh well, there's plenty more to do while you're out there. If you want a night of extremely fine dining, you should check out the Friends Lake Inn restaurant in Chestertown. It is truly an amazing dining experience.

I have stayed at Lake George RV park numerous times. This summer we are going to Moosse Hillock RV resort which just opened last month. We stayed last summer in their other Moose Hillock in New Hampshire and loved it. The new campground in Lake George looks amazing. Will decide where to stay in the upcoming years after we stay at Moose Hillock this summer. I would have no problems going back to Lake George RV park as it is a beautiful campground. I always stay in the lower level across from the tennis courts. I am a little upset that Moose Hillock allows seasonal to have golf carts, they rent golf carts to campers but I cannot use my own golf cart if I am camping there for a week. Most campgrounds that rent golf cart allow personal use golf carts for a small fee. Lake George RV park allows golf carts to everyone. hopefully Moose Hillock will adjust there rules on golf carts.

I heard one poster say the sites were not level. Was it sour grapes or are they really unlevel?

You should also check out "Tubby Tubes". It's a rafting company that takes trips down the Hudson River. Tons of fun! We always stay on the 400 Loop in the park-then you are close to the restaurant, movie theater, playhouse and outdoor pool. Your motorhome will fit no problem on these sites.

We've had our passports for years and we've been to Canada a few times but this will be our first trip to the Adirondacks and upstate NY.
