Hi. Hubby and I live on the Eastern Shore of Mobile, Alabama & am looking for a lakefront campground (lake not Gulf) within a 3-5 hour drive from home. Any suggestions in Alabama, Mississippi, or Georgia? We are looking for a campground with sites right on the water where we can fish from our site. Thank you!!!

There are a number of Corps of Engineer parks in AL with water front sites. One that is especially nice is Foscue Park near Demopolis. There are sites with hookups right on the river and other sites slightly away from river, but overlooking the water.

Other options are the COE parks on Lake Walter F George (Lake Eufaula) near Eufaula. There are a couple of state parks both in Alabama and Georgia on either side of the lake. Some have water front sites and some are just a quick walk to the water. One of my Favorite is Florence Marina State Park in GA. It has full hookups including cable, an easy walk to campground only pier, an additional fishing pier with lights, a large boat ramp and huge marina with some BIG boats in it. Now be warned this park is miles from anywhere, so you need to carry everything you need. Other than the camp store, the closest store that is more than the camp store is over 30 miles away. You will find folks that are serious about fishing in this park and those that just like to get away.

X2 on the COE parks in Alabama. Millers, Jennings Ferry, and Foscue are closest. Also, near Selma is Prairie Creek. You will find water front sites to park your boat and/or fish right from your campsite. Senior pass will give you 50% discount per night.

Not to bust chops but I alway get a kick out of someone saying this as Pontchartrain Landing is not on the lake, it is on the industrial canal that leads off of the lake. Just to let you know so when you get there and they tell you the lake is 1/2 mile to the north with no access, you are not disappointed. Now you can fish from the docks that are there so at least it is that.

Lake Guntersville SP. We wound up there by chance back in 2006 and loved it. Hope to get back some day.

X2 for Wind Creek St.Pk. on Lake Martin Ala. Clear warm water. Most of the 300+ Water/Electric sites are on the water & spaced well apart.

Look on Rec.gov for Corp. of Engineer parks on the Alabama River Lakes, Black Warrior and Tombigbee Lakes. Should find what you want.

Did a search with TripAdvisor.com and found River Country Campground in Gadsen, AL north of you. The sites on the river are only $2 more per night according to one reviewer. It received good ratings.

Though I'm now a Colorado boy, I was born and reared in Alabama! If you're willing to travel a bit to the north end of the state, there's lots of good areas around Guntersville and Scottsboro.
