Nicknamed...... The FID------"First In Defense".
Had several other unofficial names by crewmen (as do ALL NAVAL SHIPS)
USS Zippo, Forest Fire, Firestal----the 1967 incident wasn't it's only fire but was the worst. (1972, 4 in 1978)
Decommissioned in 1993 and immediately stricken from NAVAL Vessel Registry
Offered as a donation for museum or memorial in 1999......no viable takers
Redesignated for disposal in 2003....in 2007 environmentally prepped for sinking as an artificial reef
Moved to inactive ship storage from Newport, RI to Philadelphia, PA in 2010
Solicitations made for the towing and complete dismantlement...2012
2013.....SOLD for 1 PENNY to scrapyard in Brownsville, TX
Note: The scrapyard didn't pay the penny....the Pentagon paid the scrapyard
Sorry way for an old fighting ship to end up.
At least my old ship after decommissioning was used as a 'Self Defense Test Ship' for 10 years (countering anti-shipping cruise missiles) and was sunk in line of duty in 2004
