Length question for Yellowstone

It depends upon what you want to do. There are older CG in Yellowstone and this causes a problems with a lot of the larger rigs out there. Most of the park CG are small and crowded. We were just up there this spring and were shocked at how small the sites are at FB.

I would recommend you figure out what you want to do then stay at several good spots from there. West Yellowstone has some great spots, Grizzly is one, and we love the northern tier (we love to photo the animals all along the northern tier and hardly go to the Geo-thermal area at all), and so we stay at Gardiner at Yellowstone River RV Park. This park has a lot of park employees staying there so you will need to make your reservations early (they open April 1 for reservations and the park opens May 1st, I think), call them April 1st and make your reservations as soon as you can. You are 5 minutes from the north entrance and after years of visiting YNP, this is our "home" there.

With our 40' motorhome and Jeep we easily fit in Mammoth, Madison, Bridge Bay.

Here are some sites for the campgrounds and also for Fishing Bridge pictures Note that some of the campgrounds don't accept reservations so you'd need to spend the previous night closeby and get to those campgrounds early morning. It's doable. We didn't have reservations.

Also, be sure to plan on staying in Grand Teton Nat'l Park, also. It's altogether different from Yellowstone and is a beauty. Colter Bay RV is the place for hookups and Colter Bay campground (next door) and Gros Ventre are dry camping and no reservations but both have 300 sites. We've always gotten one.

Yes, your rig is Large, but Mammoth CG (north entrance) has many large sites which can accommodate Big Rigs.

We stated at Mammoth CG in 2009. Didn't need a large site, didn't take one. But there were many there, some had long TT, others had some good sized Diesel Pushers. Can't reserve any (First Come, First Served). Mammoth CG <-Check the More Information clicky . "Vechicles up to 75' can be accommodated."

We have been to Yellowstone 4 times, never had a reservation. What I have on Yellowstone & Tetons.

Our fifth pretty much filled the parking space but what they do is clear across the pavement from your site so that your truck front end has a clear path to swing while you back in. Like I said we are 39" and pull with an F350 4x4.
BTW, I questioned the size of the site when I checked in and the lady said "We know which sites you will fit in" and she was right.

Yellowstone's CGs were built long before current RV sizes existed, so sites where you will fit are pretty rare. Here's a link for Grizzly. Its only two blocks from the west gate, not 5 miles.

We camped in FB last summer in our 39' fifth wheel. There are a number of sites that accomodate big rigs. Call them directly if you have doubts. I reserved our site on line many months in advance so dont know what your chances are now.

I think I just need to firm up the dates for next year and call in for reservations. I just called a friend of mine who claims there are some bigger sites at Canyon, Madison and Grant but you have to call in to get them. He said there are some double sites at these locations. I can't find any thing about it so I may just call and see what they have to say. I don't need hookups and would prefer NOT to stay at FB. I just need a spot! I am coming from the West so Grizzly RV CG is definitely an option.

There were fifth wheels and HD trucks aplenty the last time we were at FB. That was before we bought our 5ver and we had a smaller Trailmanor. But there was an Arctic Fox a couple spots down and the guy had a Dodge HD truck. He filled my ear with the wonders of both his truck and 5ver.

But that being said FB was very tight, even with our smaller TT we were just a couple feet from the next campers. We could hear everything that was said in the TT next to us. If we had slides I don't know if we could have put them out. I didn't notice that some sites were bigger, maybe in the back section. We were in the area nearest the road and I didn't look at the other area further in.

So there were lots of 5vers in the CG and trucks were parked helter-skelter. But maybe they've tightened up the rules. This was three years ago when we were there last time.

We visited Yellowstone several years ago and stayed in two different campgrounds there. We have a 34 ft 5er. There are not a lot of sites that will accommodate large trailers or for that matter large motorhomes. In one site, we almost didn't get the trailer hooked back up to the truck! If you call for reservations, they will help you find a site that your trailer can fit into. I would cheat a little on the side of caution and give them a length slightly longer than my trailer. Just be aware that there aren't a lot of big sites
available.
