Magruder Corridor, Mt.

Thinking of doing this area this Spring/Summer. Has anybody been there? Looking for first hand info. Want to go from the east side out of Darby, Mt. Looking at Fales Flat group camp as a base camp. Any information would be appreciated. Going to have SXS and Dual Sport MC's.
  • Thanks for posting your trip report DJ and thanks to bka0721 for the link. The planned trip is in the works, but won't be driving the TC all the way, will camp and take the the Honda. Got plenty of time to do more research. That whole area of Id. & Mont looks great. Spent plenty of time down South in the Sawtooth area but never made it to the North. Planning on going all the way to BC to a friends in Princeton, BC to ride there, going to be a long trip with lots of off road riding, can't wait.

  • Ever since I switched to Norton it will not let me enter anything into the program to make a link. But you can find my TR under Trip Reports near the top of the front TC page.

  • Just did it in August, for the 4th time. Had some damage from some flash flooding to the east of Magruder cabin, which if you would like a nice base camp with shower and beds is reserveable on the Fed site. Any side trips are cherry stemmed off the main road at Hell's Half Acre lookout and Burnt Knob lookout. You can also go up the Selway river to Paradise C.G. with several small camp sites next to the river on that road. Also Magruder Crossing, which is right at the Selway turn off has some nice spots. Only C.G. with water after that as you head west is Poet Creek, but there are several nice spots with toilets, just no creek or river close by. Elk City on the other end has gas, laundry, grocery store, and cafes. There were quite a few fires late August after we went thru, around Red River Lodge, Elk City, and the Selway, so can't speak to the scenery of the condition of the road after this winter (mud slides and tree falls), but if you are later in the season, those should be cleaned up. We actually did a loop of 800 miles this year, starting and ending in Cascade, Id, that was atv friendly with only about 25 miles of pavement, the rest dirt. Took 8 days with not too rapid a pace. You do need Idaho street legal plate, which out of state atv's can purchase at the court house in most towns in Idaho. Cost is less than 25$ and allows you on county roads, no state highways. We found out alot of the dirt roads in the forest are actually county roads, but got only warnings and took care of the plate when we got to a town. It's no problem with AZ or other state street legal plates and insurance.
  • Check with the Ranger Station at West Fork before you start - the road didn't open until July last summer due to snow. Road is in good shape - no issues with SxS or ATVs.
