MO & AR trip report

We took a 9 day trip. Our style. No reservations. Decide as we go... so we headed out from St. Louis area on I-44 and went to Roaring River SP in SW MO. So we were lucky to get the last spot with no electric! Turns out it was the last weekend before catch and release season. Nice park! We stayed a couple of nights then headed south for warmer temps. We stayed 3 nights at Lake Dardanelle SP in Russellville, AR. Arkansas has really nice state parks! We explored Petit Jean SP, Mt. Nebo SP and Mt. Mitchell SP while we were there. Then we decided to head south on Rt 7 to Lake Ouachita SP (3rd time staying there). We rode our bikes on the (seemingly never ending) service road out to the end of the point on Caddo Bend! It rained the whole night on the first night. So we opened the awning and grilled our steaks on the little weber. After tent camping for 25 years an awning is golden and the bathroom too, of course. We love our trailer! We stayed 2 nights then headed to IL. We ended up stopping for the night at the West side campground at the Horseshoe lake rec area in the Cairo area. It was a great trip! I think we are getting the hang of traveling w/o the kids. They are grown. Happy travels everyone!

  • I recently did an AR trip myself. I spent about four days or so there. Bull Shoals Diamond City/Lead Hill CG. It was free as they were in the process of shutting down. I also did two nights at Greer's Ferry Lake. The colors were at about peak while there and I also had two days of rain that put a damper on things.
  • We also love the AR S.P. system, never stayed in a bad one, but then again what they say about the worst day camping is better than the best day working thing mite come into play.

We like kayaking on horseshoe too.

glad y'all had a good trip neighbor....

  • I agree with the AR has great state parks. VERY underrated state.
  • Thanks for the trip report! Love Arkansas State Parks. Lake Catherine SP in Hot Springs is one of our favorites and DeGray Lake is another.
