Looking for a campground close to Mt.Washington. We are visiting family in Braintree Mass. then up to N.H. Then up to Maine. Any recomdation will be appreciated. Any Thing that is a must see? Thanks Bobby

Hi - what are you looking for in a campground? FHU? Primative? Pets? Kids? Rig size? You just want to be in the White Mountains, or are you planning to hike/drive/or take the train up Mt. Wash? Lots to chose from - just need some more details! ST

Obviously the Cog Train up the mountain.... But Franconia Notch State Park, and The Flume are must sees.

While a little far we chose Danforth Bay Camping Resort. We day tripped to Mt Washington and surrounding area attractions. We also vegged out and relaxed at the CG which had to many things for the kids to do. That gave us valuable adult downtime. If you do this I will recommend Yankee BBQ order "the feast" Its for 4 persons but we had enough left over for lunch the next day even though we were 4! Its on the road on the way in.Happy Trails

We spend some time in that area every year. Our favorites are:1. Saco River Camping Area,1550 White Mountain Highway (Rt. 16), North Conway, NH 03860 Phone: (603) 356-3360, info@sacorivercampingarea.com, GPS: 44.020649,–71.1184342. Eastern Slope Camping, 584 White Mountain Highway, Route 16, Conway NH 603-447-5092Our favorite is Saco River Camping area but it fills up fast and reservations are recommended. During the summer it is almost impossible to drop by with no reservation and get a spot. They have a five night minimum but if you call they can normally fit you in for shorter stays. Some of the sites in the middle row are set up so you are awning to awning with your neighbor. Great if you are travelling with someone but a little awkward if you are sharing a site with a stranger. Let them know what your preference is when you book.Eastern Slope is a great alternative. Nice but a little tighter. The auto route up the mountain is interesting and a bit of a thrill. Worth every penny. Try some of the local restaurants in the area, we haven't found a bad one yet!Safe Travels

Well, this thread made me poke around a bit! There is another campground nearby with great reviews on RVParkreviews, Crawford Notch Campground, but the latest review is from 2008. Anyone been there recently?

Another suggestion for Danforth Bay Camping Resort. Just check the reviews. Summer reservations can be tough as it fills up fast.

X2 for Danforth Bay. It is a nice place with lots of space and privacy between sites. There is a great restaurant in the old train station in Osoppee (SP)

I forgot to mention we stayed at Lost River Valley Campground. It's in N. Woodstock and about 45min to Mt. Washington, but it's 10min to Franconia Notch State Park.

Last Summer we stayed at Tarry Ho CG in Twin Mountain. Nice little family run (FHU) campground on the river. Convenient to the Cog Railway and the "Notches".

The grandson enjoyed playing along the river bank within sight of the campsite.

Most recently (8/14/14) we stayed at Timberlake Campground in Gorham, NH. In our four visits to the area we have never had good enough weather to drive up Mt. Washington. I recall Timberlake as being a pleasant enough place. lizzie

Sorry Crabby, there ain't no such thing as Yankee BBQ. Proper barbecue comes only from Brevard County NC.

We stayed at Saco River Campground a couple of years ago while exploring Mt. Washington. If you choose this one, I would recommend NOT getting a site on the river. Although lovely to be near water, when it rains, those sites got very muddy. Sites that are farther back in the grassy areas would be preferable. As I recall, all hookups worked well and the bathhouse was relatively clean. Lots of traffic in North Conway so don't plan on going anywhere quickly!

We stayed at the Twin Mountain KOA. Close to the train, but not the auto road. Then hop on rt 2 over to Maine.

Google for reviews. Road Tripper and Trip Advisor users have posted more recently. Looks pretty nice.
