Natchez, MS

I want to go to Natchez during Christmas holidays (2 weeks off from school) from NE Texas. Thought I'd check here for things not to miss between here & there and what not to miss while in the area. I know to tour some of the homes but are some not to be missed over some that would be ok to miss? I liked the package that was a carriage tour & tour of three homes.
Don't have any idea what route we'd even take but might depend on suggestions of things to see & do on the way. It will just be DH, me & 2 labs.
  • I suggest Riverview RV Park in Vidalia, La. Excellent views of the river, concrete walkway along river bank and it is a Passport America park. Natchez should be pretty all decorated for Christmas.
  • We did that last year and really enjoyed it. We went on two Pilgrimage tours of homes not normally open to the Public (6 homes). I would recommend that you don't ignore visiting some of the homes that are open year round as well as some of them are stunning. I recommend Longwood, Stanton Hall, Magnolia Hall, Rosalie and Monmouth. I would recommend lunch and lemon meringue pie at Mammy's Cupboard.
Also, recommend Riverview Rv Park as that is were we stayed and it was wonderful. Pay attention to the directions to the park from the park. There is a new driveway from LA 131 that crosses the levee and takes you directly into the park. Our GPS did not show that road and had us pulling off LA 131 and crossing the levee before that which took us thru a neighborhood that it would have been better to avoid pulling our 5th wheel.
  • Riverview RV Park x4! Don't miss the cemetery. Huge old ornate mausoleums and fences. Not sure about winter but they had evening tours with people dressed in period attire.
North of Natchez in Port Gibson is Grand Gulf Military Park. Maybe on the way back?
  • Definitely see Longwood and Stanton Hall as mentioned above. Cemetery is fascinating also if you research it beforehand.
  • Just a suggestion if you like tamales--Fat Mama's Tamales on S. Canal Street.

Also, lunch at the beautiful old Eola Hotel downtown.

And for something different, Natchez Under the Hill.
  • Agree with all above, but add: Nachitoches, LA on the way. There is a very adequate overnight RV park: Nakatoch RV Park. They have a great Christmas display on the Caine River. Visit Melrose Plantation outside Nachitoches.
