September up this way is the best. Most of the tourists have gone, and it's too early for the bus tours with the leaf peepers. I'm not anti-people, but the coastal regions can really get crowded. In the Bar Harbor area, we preferthe KOA Woodside -- cheaper and more services. Get a place way back in the field. Cell phone service is spotty and television is non-existant without a dish. Bring cool weather clothes -- layering is best. We'll be there mid-September. In the mid-coast, Saltwater Farm in Thomaston is our favorite -- very quiet, but close to everything. We'll be there in July.

I(mostly) agree, But here in Northern New England most CGs close on or around Columbus Day. The very nice NPS CG Seawall on Mount Desert Island closes on October first.

Oh, and Acadia is great to visit. Blackwoods campground in the park is No hookups, but a great campground. Various private campgrounds in the area to choose from also. The park is setup so all the major areas can be accessed by car, but it is easy to get away from people by hiking just a little way off the most used paths. Also fantastic bicycling, with miles of "carriage roads" to ride on.

The weather is usually great, the attractions are less crowded, but you will be very aware of the weekends. More so than most places (except Southern California), the parks, campgrounds and roads fill up starting Friday afternoon. Do not plan on switching parks during the weekend, and Labor Day weekend, don't move!

Be ready for rain

Actually September is one of the drier months, UNLESS summer hangs on.

September is fair season up here. Other than Labor Day weekend, shouldn't be hard to get a site as kids are back in school, although it seems locals are camping later each year. Weather is usually warm, dry days, w/cool nights. As others have stated, the further north you go the colder it will be. Usually! Right now there's some serious flooding going on in some areas-hopefully there won't be much damage. Still a lot of snow to melt.

We have been going to Bar Harbor at the end of September and first week in October for the last several years, staying at the Oceanside KOA. The weather has always been comfortable and sometimes the foliage is beginning to turn. We go home through Northern NH and the leaves are usually spectacular the further inland you go.

Early September in the Northeast you should be OK as far as weather but unfortunately in the last two years the weather here (and elsewhere) is anyone's guess. We are still waiting for Spring to start and there is supposed to be snow sometime tonight. So if you asked how is April in the Northeast what most would tell you does not apply this year.
