Mama Gertie's Hideaway
15 Uphill Rd, Swannanoa, NC 28778

Last summer we wanted to take a trip to Asheville, NC and camp all the way down. Mind you we're coming from southern Maryland. Several weeks before departing Maryland, we stopped at one of the local truck stops to grab a laminated travel map and overheard a couple of RVer's talking about mamas campground. All we heard was praise and decided we would have to check this campground out.

Calling ahead to reserve a site (tent camping) we had a very limited selection to choose from, but the host assured us there was enough space within a secluded area of the campground. While on the highway towards Asheville, we noticed signs directing us right to the campground, so that's was easy.. but what waited ahead of us..

Hills and more hills.. Not suited for man nor beast. the hills within the camping area really took a toll on our knees and back.. mind you the tent camping was several meters away from any bathroom.. so walking down the bath house was easy.. the hard part was walking back up the steep hills afterward.

Two other issues crept up while camping there, 1st, while sitting in our chairs either early morning or late afternoon.. we heard this thumping noise and what seem to be allot of bark on the top of our tent.. turns out we just so happen to have set up tent under a squirrels feeding area and they were dropping their left overs all over us. death from above as we called it..

Later that night we were very well entertained by a young lady who camped two site above us. "Smelly Cat" as we later referred to her as, based on the (song from Friends) decided to play her guitar as well as her flute at 10:00 pm est.. If it wasn't for the fact that the camping area was so hilly with sharp hidden curves entering and exiting the campsites, the squirrels bombarding us for several hours and not having our deposit refunded because of these issues.. Just makes me wonder how this campsite is even staying in business.

Then realizing, Wait a Minute, We're out of our element..*slaps forehead* this isn't a typical tent camper campground, moreover it was an RVer's heaven with even more sites on the way. So if you're a tent camper or a weekend hiker, avoid mama's "RV" Campground.. I stress RV for a reason. The whole time we were there, we felt out of place and stuck out like a sore thumb. Next time, We'll make sure we select a tent campers campground instead of an RV park..

Two Thumbs Down..

Yep. Just like everybody in your region wears untanned hides, fringed leather jackets, and carries a buffalo rifle....

All I can think of is squirrels, hilly terain, and music in the mountains.
How have we let our country get so out of whack. I think I'll get me an RV and sit inside with my TV volume up loud and my bathroom all inside with me..Oh no, was that an acorn that just dropped on my roof ?
LET'S GO CAMP. Winter is destroying our minds. It has mine.

I think this is a case of comparing apples to oranges. You were in an RV park, not a tent campground. And, yes, after spending 10 summers taking my Boy Scouts to that area for their week long summer camp I can attest that there are hills in that area. And, yes, the woods do have creatures, including squirrels that may eat nuts over top your tent.

Tents are movable. Why couldn't you have moved it even a few feet if it was that bothersome ?

"Calling ahead to reserve a site (tent camping) we had a very limited selection to choose from, but the host assured us there was enough space within a secluded area of the campground."

Key word: Secluded.
I would generally expect this to mean "far away from bathroom".

You were obviously unhappy with your stay, but from your post it's difficult to see how it's the campgrounds fault. Hills? Squirrels?

I checked out their site and it doesn't identify the terrain. Perhaps they should. But if it were my bad back and medical needs, I'd be sure to inquire when booking a site.

And if it were up to me (it isn't) we'd be a tent camping family. I love my Kiwi, but roughing it in a tent is real camping.

this campground wasn't for you. bad choice. others would love it.

you just have to remember that you need to fit yourself. when you saw the situation wtih your medical troubles, you should have found another site. asheville area is loaded with flat walking cgs.

It's all fun and games until a squirrel loses a nut.

Lastly.. as for the hilly conditions.. when one has a bad back, bad knees and is on heart medicine.. going to and from the laundry/bath house was very challenging.. You can post all the Positive reviews you want.. simply because you're all RVer's and we aren't.
I'm simply informing anyone who isn't an RVer, to stay away from these types of sites and yes we will continue to tent camp even in the rain.. been there.. done that.. enjoyed it.

I still don't understand what any of this has to do with "being an RVer" or not. With the health conditions you mention, those are good reasons for becoming RVers. I just never heard of tenters who complained about the terrain they were camping in. Even in the flats of WI, its not uncommon for tent areas to be in hilly and uneven ground.

Last year, at a fed park we go to near Asheville, we had a squirrel that chewed through a screeen window and had his run of the camper while we were out. Then there were those three hummingbirds that kept fighting over some blooms in our site. And then at dusk all the fireflies. And at dawn all the birds celebrating the rising of the sun. The river behind our site was full of trout. And the sky was blue. Didn't think to ask for a refund.

Off topic here sorry but I need to know what the cactus is in the second pic. I have one I bought at a yard sale 4 years ago. It was only about 6 little stems, now it covers an area about 3' x 4'. Poor thing looks like a blob of mush when the snow is gone but it is amazing how it perks up and there isn't a spot that doesn't get the yellow flowers.

Be VERY VERY careful with those cactus, they spread like weeds and your entire lawn will be covered with them. I had them take over a couple of acres in my horse pasture. And I had planted them up by the house. ๐Ÿ˜ž
