We rode down the coast on Route 101 last summer in July. My plan was and is to google up campgrounds in the area of my expected daily stops for the next 5 days,check out the reviews and call ahead. We spent a month poking down the Oregon coast and we always were able to find a spot. Now bear in mind these were all private campgrounds, and were rather expensive, $50 to $70 per night. Didn't like paying that much, but that is just the way it is because we had no idea where we were going to be a year out. Also we have a smaller RV 25' OAL so we were always told they could find a spot for us.

Oh, not to preach but, there are pull offs all the way down rt 101, we used them all the time and it always seemed the local folks would smile, toot their horn and wave thanks as they passed by...

Without reservations we've stayed at these state parks: Beverly Beach, Bullards Beach, Carl Washburne, Fort Stevens, Harris Beach and Cape Blanco. However, we pulled in during morning hours not at 4-5pm and never on the weekends or holidays. Get there early in the week. There are plenty of forest service and county parks along with casinos and private parks and even some great boondocking spots inland a little. We've been along the coast from May to October at various times.

2gypsies info is about the most accurate. I have and still live in the Eugene/Springfield Oregon area. I have seen the Oregon Coast popularity rise and rise over the years. We rarely go to the coast in the summer, unless it's for a day ride on the motorcycle ( 1 hour away).
During the week days there is a chance of getting a place. Like 2gypsies said, look early or even call ahead to ask for cancellation openings.
Astoria has enough things to do to keep you busy for a week. Starting with all the museums.

Won't go into detail but I am a Reservation Guy. Among other things I would rather spend my time enjoying why I am there than driving around trying to find a decent place to stay.

I know there are some that don't agree with my philosophy but to each their own.

Last year we were in CO late July to mid Sept - reservations for each night.

This year many of the same, and some new, places --- yup, all reservations in place for the 66 nights.

Have we had to adjust at times. Yes, but very few times in now our 21 years at this rv'ing thingy.

You can also keep checking on the Oregon state park websites for cancellations....people do change their plans; you might have to be flexible; you will probably be able to do a mix of private parks and state parks that way. Or, if at all possible, go during the shoulder seasons (spring/fall) for more availability. Be sure to go to the Tillamook Cheese factory for cheese and ice cream! Have fun.
