Oregon Coast - Labor Day

We expect to be traveling down the Oregon Coast the latter part of August and/or early September. With the Labor Day holiday I know many campgrounds will be full.

We will be pulling a small 17 ft camper and do not need hookups. We typically prefer to stay in National Parks,State Parks, and National Forest campgrounds. At this point our schedule is uncertain thus we are hesitant to make reservations. Would it be reasonable to expect one might find a site available during this period either first come first served or short notice reservations? We would be willing to find a site away from the coast and use it as a base to explore from. Campground recommendations?

We are currently at Oceanside RV Resort Coos Bay area. This is our second stay here and will not be the last. Clean, level sites, very friendly staff, affordable and from our site to the beach is 50 yards with trees between our site and the beach for a wind break. Listing to the surf as I respond.

We're planning on being there the week before Labor Day but will head inland to Collier State Park that Friday. I was really nervous about not having something reserved somewhere so made reservations.

Our plans are to take 5 or 6 days to go from Astoria to Reedsport then make our way to Collier. No doubt we'll be trying that during the most crowded part of the year! We can do without hookups as well but will be in a 35' coach towing a Jeep and I know there are some CGs that we can't use so I'm hoping to find some private CGs along the way.

I'd love to hear suggestions on what to see and decent easy to get to campgrounds preferably state or fed but private would work too.

There are also some nice NF campgrounds along the coast. Since you don't need hookups, you should be able to find something.

You might also look at County Campgrounds by County. We have stayed at quite a few just fine spots, some are so inexpensive and still have electric plug ins.

As with every campsite, people move out all days, some have three days to get home, so leave Friday morning, others are there for the whole weekend. It's always good to arrive very early when it's busy, and sit for a day or two if you get a decent spot and it's busy.

Harbor Vista is a good spot, only a couple sites have views, but we have managed to get those sites in February.. nice.

I really think you'd be able to find something at that time. However, plan to come into the park a few days prior to the beginning of the holiday weekend. As you get closer to the time you might feel more confident calling for a reservation. With your size RV a good bet might be Fort Stevens State Park which has a lot of sites, the Carl G. Washbourne State Park at Florence, OR or further south at Cape Blanco. Those three areas aren't as heavily used as some of the other areas. Also around Florence are some nice forest service campgrounds. There are a few casinos along the way and lots of private RV parks. You've got some research to do. Good luck!

labor day week end is a mad house down there. all the people from the valley will be making their last summer coast weekend and reservations will be tight at the most. better find a place and call ahead.
