Overnight campground between Chicago-Myrtle beach?

As the title says, I am looking for a decent overnight stop on the way home somewhere in Kentucky, Tennessee or ???? I`ve been searching for places, but haven`t really found any place that sounds nice.

Looking for suggestions!
  • If you are going via I-75, the campground at Renfro Valley in Mt. Vernon Kentucky is very close to the interstate and has some nice museums and shops to tour. You might even get lucky and go to one of the live country music or gospel performances.
  • Not sure if it's on your route, but when we drove from Michigan to Florida, we stopped at Chattanooga Holiday Trav-L-Park on the way down and again on the way up. Well-cared for grounds. Office staff was great. Got in late and left at 6 a.m. So didn't get the full experience, but we liked what we saw. Safe travels!
  • Thanks everyone. I will check into the suggestions.
As for MB, I will be getting there on sun. That is sun. July 6th.
  • We like Mayberry Campground in Mt Airy. If you need another choice in that area. In West Virginia we liked Lake Summersville Corps of Engineers park. Forgot the name of the park but you can look it up on www.recreation.gov
  • Sorry don't have a suggestion for an overnight... But rather wanted to recommend that if at all possible do not head into MB on a Saturday. During the high season it seems as if the entire population of the town changes out on Sat. Most condo rentals run from Sat to Sat.

  • I can second Levi Jackson sp, but you're still a long days drive from home. I've stopped at a couple of places in Berea; nothing very special but ok for an overnight.
  • Thanks. I am willing to drive a bit out of the way. I was considering the Gauly Bridge area in WV. I`de like to find something to see so I can add another state to my map :B !

BTW, I will be staying at Beechnut Campground in MT Airy NC to check out the birthplace of Andy Griffith and the unofficial home of Mayberry!
  • Depending on the route you take, if you stay on I-40 toward Nashville, we like Spring Lake RV Park at Crossville TN. About 3-4 miles from the interstate but a nice little park. No pool. There are several parks at the north end of Sevierville TN. River Plantation RV Resort about 10 miles from I-40. The Corbin KY KOA doesn't get great reviews but it worked well for us. Also Levi Jackson State Park in London KY is nice.
