The OP is only going from LA to Morro Bay, way south of the slide closure.

Don't forget the Ronald Reagan Museum in Simi Valley. Special exhibit the Titanic is great

Ditto on the Solvang area. DW and I run up there on a wine buying trip once every year. We like to stay at Flying Flags in Buellton, and run around with the toad.

I just did a Google search for `California highway 1 sights' and got a ton of websites to peruse.

Go a bit further north. Hearst Castle, Paso Robles wine country, Carmel, Monterey Aquarium.
