Public CG south of I4 in FL after Christmas

I'm looking for a public campground below I4 where I can spend a week between Christmas and New Years.

I'm pretty flexible, as long as it has a bath house with showers.

Any ideas? I seem to get stuck in a rut as far as campgrounds go.

Does anyone know if gas outboards are permitted in the river that runs through Hillsboro? I have an 8' Portabote with a 3 1/2 hp Tohatsu that would be a lot of fun.

Reservation made at Hillsboro. Alafia is full for my timeframe. Couldn't talk my wife into Okeechobee. I think that would be a cool trip.

Thanks everybody!

Last I knew, Alafia did not have hookups and was primitive campsites. Glad you were able to get into Hillsborough. It makes a great base camp for sightseeing Ina Tampa/Sarasota area.

Alafia has been electric and water for several years, great hiking and mountain biking but fills up in the winter with northern visitors, which can be said for just about all Florida state parks.

If you don't mind being in a somewhat remote state park with peace and quiet, try Alafia River State Park. I would definitely make reservations. I think the max stay is 14 days and you may have to move. There are 3 sites left in December.

Agreed, Hillsborough River SP IS a great place. However it is about 11 miles north of I-4. If the OP is flexible about that fact I do recommend it.

Here's the link to check for other Florida State Parks south of I-4

I assume you mean State Parks or COE parks. Try these two sites and enter the dates you want. I wouldn't wait to long to make a reservation. There are three COE parks along the Okeechobee Water Way, there all very nice.

Try Tamiami RV. It is in North Ft. Myers, about 3 miles off I-75. It would be about 2 hours south of I-4, which will guarantee you really nice weather for that week.

The reason I am throwing this CG out there is that it is very well maintained, not in a congested area, inexpensive by Florida standards, and has a nice pool/bathhouse.

But I would be calling soon to reserve a site. I went through there last week and there was only 2 or 3 units. When we stayed there for a week last November there were only 5 or 6 sites empty.
