Recommend (or not) campgrounds near Natchez Trace Pkwy.?

Looking for recommendations for FHU or at least water/electric with a dump station, near the Natchez Trace Parkway.

We will be spending some nights at the no-amenities campgrounds on the Trace, but want to alternate with hookups.

Leaving March 30th from Middle TN, with a pickup & 26' trailer, 2 adults. Don't need anything fancy, just quiet and clean.
  • Davis Lk, USFS; Elec and water at site. Dump on the way in/out. About 3 miles from the Parkway.
  • On the south end at Natchez I would recommend Natchez State Park.

We were there last year and Natchez has a lot of history and some nice Antebellum homes you can tour. The cemetery is also a very interesting and pretty place.

On 61 just south of Natchez there is Mammy's cupboard restaurant that was built in 1940 to look like Aunt Jemima.

You can find many interesting things to do in Natchez. We are stopping there again in May on our way to Georgia and South Carolina.

    Enjoy your trip!
  • Trace State Park, about 10 miles off the Trace west of Tupelo. Very nice, with full hook-ups. Lots of others also, we have stayed at most. Might want to avoid Tombigee state park on the east side of Tupelo. Nice park, but difficult to get to, and nothing to do. Small campground. Park campground at Meriweather Lewis is a long way back in the woods, no hookups, very isolated, small sites. I would say no on that also. How far down the Trace are you going??
  • Another very nice on is Davis Lake, about 10 miles south of Tupelo, fight off the Trace. Water and electric, nice bathhouses, good dump station, Beautifu site on lake. If the bridge is still out, its a bit more difficult to get to, but worth it. Might need to check for availability on weekends.
  • Piney Grove in north Mississippi is very nice. Not very far from the Trace. Lots of nice waterfront sites.
  • We stayed almost a week at Riverview RV Park in Vidalia, LA. It is on the Mississippi River and Natchez is on the other side. Wonderful place and it has Passport America with no limitations. It is FHU and views of the Mississippi where you can watch the barges go by and the lights on the bridge at night are lovely. You can catch the parkway outside of Natchez. You must see the old Presbyterian Church in Natchez with a fabulous photo exhibit of old Natchez. Go to lower Natchez and learn its history. Tons of beautiful homes to tour and an old cemetery that I never had enough time to walk through. The sunken trace is nearby too. Also, off the parkway is a NPS area where the forgotten town was located and lots of remnants of the town. A lovely old church is at the end of the trail, still in use today. Try a restaurant called the "C...k of the Walk" - ask anyone and you'll learn the history of what it means. The moderator will "bleep" out the C..K.
Nothing more than a male chicken!

Mammy's Cupboard is a must!!! Great home cooking.
  • We just spent a couple of days at Tombigbee State Park near Tupelo. It's not far off the Trace and is a very pleasant, small campground. An advantage of MS state parks is their discount for seniors - six dollars off a 20 dollar site. Here are some pictures and comments.
