I posted a camping question in yellowstone a couple of weeks ago and got some really good tips. We have a class C that we will be driving thru the park. I've never been to the park and have no idea of the size. someone recommended "camping" as you go thru the park and i loved that idea. is there a good book or camping guide thru yellowstone? we're coming from illinois and will go thru the dakotas and the black hills. i'd really like to start either north or south and camp as we wind thru the park. looking for a guidebook. thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions. we just got back from mackinaw, canadian jaunt, and niagra falls. looking west next year. thanks, jeff

Attempting to camp IN Yellowstone is probably way more trouble than it's worth considering all the good campgrounds right outside the Park. At West Yellowstone there are a number of good private campgrounds and even a National Forest Campground just a couple miles to the north - - with water, trash pickup - and even electricity at about half the sites.

At least think about not having to stay in the park.

doing a quick look-see. it doesn't look like very many parks actually have electric hookups. i have sleep apnea and have to have power. is Fishing Bridge the only one with power hookup?

The above-mentioned campground link will give you the campground information.

Here's an additional document with an excellent map showing where the campgrounds are located within the park along with lots of neat information. I don't know how current it is but it would be close:

Here is a good link for all the roads going into Yellowstone so you can make an easier choice:

Yellowstone Park web page for Camping. Scroll down to the list of campgrounds and click on each name for more info.

Scroll to the bottom for a link to campgrounds outside the Park but near each of Yellowstone's entrances.

camping at different places is ok, but you have to make reservations for them if you want to be sure to have a place when you want it.
the park is very big, about 80 x 80 miles square.
there are two large loop roads, forming a rough figure 8. Each loop requires at least one full day to get around and see some things as you go. Better to figure two days for each loop if time allows.
If I was planning it, I'd stay in Madison (they have water and a dump station and lots of shade.
and then I'd move over to Fishing Bridge if you want some electricity, or Canyon or Bridge Bay if you don't really feel the need for elec. Bridge Bay also has water and a dump station. Not sure about Canyon.
These campgrounds are sort of middle in the park so you can make the loops easily enough.
But make the reservations as soon as you can.

we are looking at next year (i hear you need to get reservations early) and we're looking for places to camp in 30' class c. we don't need full hookups, just a place to get water and dump occasionally.

Well, I'm not sure what you mean by camping....there's camping at the various campsites in Yellowstone - some have services most don't. On the back page of the seasonal newspaper is a list of the campgrounds and what they provide. My favorite one of these is Mammoth, but you have to get to these places early in the day cause they fill up fast.

This is a link to their back country guide if you want to camp in the back country.

And finally this is a link to all their publications. YNP does a great job of putting out all sorts of planning information. HOpe this helps.
We'd rather be out traveling, but I still work so we're part-timers.

There is only one CG with any services in Yellowstone and that's Fishing Bridge. I doubt that you will find it easy to get last minute reservations there. But you could always check for cancellations if you stop at the office.

Yellowstone is big, we have been there a number of times. The last time for 8 days and we just got to visit every major part of the park. You could spent a month there and still have plenty to do. It would probably take 6 to 8 hours to drive all the way across-west to east. Mainly because of the traffic and rubbernecker blockades.
