Redwood Forest -- North or South -- 30 foot TT

I am so confuse with Redwood NP or SP or both.. . . :h

In Mid to late May, we will be driving up the coast on US101. It looks like we will drive through about 60 miles of different redwood parks.

We plan to stay two nights (looks like lots of open reservations sites) at USFS at Panther Flat. This will allow us to visit in detail the north (?) part of the NP/SP.

Have we missed something important in the parks? We do not have longer to stay in the park since we need to be in OR, but we want to see the big trees.

Do you have a better suggestion?
  • If you have time, our very favorite part of the Redwoods is Prairie creek State Park, between Eureka and Crescent City. If you have time for only one trail there, I would recommend the James Irvine Trail.

You don't need to do the whole trail to get the full flavor. But you do need to get away from cars and the sound of traffic, in order to truly experience the "cathedral" aspect of a redwood grove. Avenue of the Giants is very pretty, but the trails tend to be fairly near the highway. The same is true of the trails at Jed Smith.
  • I agree with Dave. Try Ancient Redwood RV Park. It can handle larger rigs and is centrally located for visiting Humboldt Redwood SP. Remember there are three state parks within a national park. A jurisdictional nightmare! Redcrest RV Park seems ok too but I haven't stayed there. It is "in" town.
  • I have been in and around that area my whole life and this is what I would recommend.

On your way north on Hwy 101 take the avenue of the Giants (Clicky to web site). Great Redwood groves and a nice area for lunch.

Then I would continue north and the Hwy 101 Scenic route through Prairie Creek State Park (just north of Orick). Some more nice groves. Another nice area for lunch.

Continuing north on Hwy 101 and Hwy 199 stay at Panther flat, Crescent City KOA or Jedediah State Park for 2 days. Great groves at Jed.
  • I have stayed at Ancient Redwoods RV in Redcrest. Nice full hookup park close to redwood groves. nice, large sites.
