RV Parking + Cabins or Yurts - South Yellowstone area

We will have one couple that will need a cabin, yurt or tent. Two other couples will have RV's, one is 40'.

This will be the first time for two of the couples in the Yellowstone and Teton area. So was hoping to visit both, and thus a place midway between the two would allow day trips either direction.

I see that Colter Bay has cabins available, and we've stayed at the RV Park before. So this is a possible solution.

What other National, state or other parks can you think of in the area?

We're great fans of Tetons Gros Ventre campground. It does have tent camping available, but as I recall the tents and RV areas are separate parts of the park? And, it is a long drive to get into Yellowstone for a few days of sight seeing.

Ideally, a location that would be closer towards the South Side of Yellowstone might be our best bet.

This is for a 2015 trip...

Opinions and recommendations please!

  • Thanks all. Did not know that Flagg's had been absorbed within the park system...

I also just learned that Gros Ventre, one of our favorite campgrounds, has some sites with electric hook up added. Positive is areas with less generators running, negative is probably another population of campers who prefer power will add to the gang looking for spots:)!

The couple is going to do the math on possibly picking up a rental RV on our way North from Southern California. Provo, UT has a place that might workout for this. If it's within a few hundred dollars difference compared to a cottage rental, they're leaning towards that as it provides more flexibility. We'll have two vehicles with us, so enough room for all of us to get out and get around.

THis would allow Gross Ventre for the Tetons, and probably Madison for the Yellowstone homebase.

They'll let us know next week.

    Appreciated the input!!

  • We stayed at West Yellowstone KOA. Lovely campground with cabins. After leaving West Yellowstone we drove through the park to Jackson and stayed at The Virginian. A clean gravel park behind a older but well kept two story hotel. RV guest have access to hotel facilities of pool and laundry and snack bar. Right in the center of Jackson. I recommend both.
  • Flagg Ranch campground isn't fancy, but has the facilities you want and is closest to Yellowstone Park. Colter Bay is the second choice for you. Skip the rv park down by Moran Junction.
  • Why not invite the couple to bunk with you or the other couple? On occasions, we have had guests for a week. Some adjustments have to be made, like staying at a CG with fhu's so showering will not be an issue.
I know of the cocktails for 6, dinner for 4 and sleeps 2. But, you can make it work.
  • A couple of choices for you. Check out the reviews for them (Moran,Wy) on rvparkreviews.com.

  • Flagg Ranch is located right between the two parks. It has FHU sites and cabins. We've never stayed there, but could be the ticket for access to the two parks.
