One thing to remember is that the Salton Sea is not a natural lake/ environment. There was no Salton Sea until a mistake by engineers caused massive uncontrolled flooding in 1905. It took about two years to stop the flooding,
The sea is slowly drying up, returning to the natural dry Lake bed.
That said, it was an interesting must see about a year ago as we traveled from Las Vegas to San Diego, but as others have mentioned, the smell ensured we would not stop for an overnight.
