Sight seeing near Destin

We are going to be at Henderson Beach State Park in Mid April for 10 days. Any suggestions for sightseeing or attractions. We are seniors but able to get around just fine. Thanks so much for any advise.
  • For me, the Pensacola Naval Air Station, aviation museum.

Ft Walton Beach to get the feel of an old-time Gulf Coast beach community. It is not quite a Key West, but neither is it the gated-community feel of late 20th century developments around Destin.

Then Mobile, to visit Battleship Alabama, and to see a thriving southern port city.

Beyond Mobile, Biloxi-Gulfport for a mini-Las Vegas on the sea.

    That's probably stretching "near."
  • Go to the Pensacola Naval Air station to visit the naval air museum - very awesome place. On Tuesday's, the Blue Angles practice and you can watch. The museum is free. Drive time about an hour, and my advice is to leave early to get there.
  • I went on a two hour Dolphin Cruise. It was not very expensive and it was great to get out on the water, see things from another perspective, and saw so many dolphins that I got tired of looking at them.

BTW, stayed at Henderson St. Pk and loved it.

I forgot to mention McGuires Irish Pub and Destin Harborside.

I prefer the original McGuires in Pensacola. The new one is okay, but I don't think it's as good.
  • We enjoy Run Runners in Sandestin for evening entertainment.
I believe there is also a Rum Runners in Ft. Walton.
Liked the Gulfarium near Ft. Walton too.

The town of Seaside is an interesting place near there. It's a planned community on the beach and the "The Truman Show" was filmed there with Jim Carry. I like to go there and take photos of the architecture.

We love Seaside. We like staying at Grayton Beach State Park right outside of Seaside. We don't really do much more than the beach or pool while in Destin. We may go to a store or two and eat out, but that is about it. We normally stay at Topsail.

Some will probably recommend driving down towards Pensacola and watch the Blue Angels practice.

Perhaps you can note some of the type of sight seeing stuff you like?

Eden State Gardens is a nice place to visit, especially if the azaleas are out.
