We are planning a fall trip to the smokey mountains. I'm pretty sure about staying at Twin Creeks for that part of it. We would like to see the Biltmore Estate and part of the blue ridge parkway. Would it make more sense to stay closer to Asheville for the Biltmore & BRP or use Twin creeks as a base for that too. If so where would be a good campground considering that we will be going back to Illinois from there.

Never been to Twin Creeks but did stay at Campfire Lodgings Campground. Good people.

It's been a few years but we stayed at the Ashville West koa, it wasn't huge but was well kept and close to the Biltmore and Ashville.

Just be careful of the Blue Ridge Pkwy, there are a lot of very low tunnels (too low for many medium to large trailers). I think there are a couple in the 10' range. Check their website, it lists the clearances and mile markers of all the tunnels.

While you are on the Blue Ridge Parkway. you should leave the smokeys behind, and come on over to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Smoky Mountains are only a very small part of the NC Mountains. Once you leave the Smokeys, and ride the BRP toward Linville, Grandfather Mountain, Little Switzerland, Boone, Blowing Rock, And other places in the NC High Country.You will find much cooler temps, and great views.

Agree with Terryallan; Smokies are too far to use as a base for those sights. I would stay in NC and explore there. You can always go back to 40 and skirt gsm on the way back and be back where you would have been anyway. Lots of good choices in NC. Have a great trip!

You will be well out of the Smokey mountains after 100 miles.
Most of the BRP is in NC. None of it is in Tenn. So if you stay in the toursty area. It's a pretty good drive just to get on the BRP. And As I say. the farther North you go, the cooler and prettier it gets. Lots of stuff to see on, or right off the parkway.

Tour busses take the Skyline drive and the BRP all the time. I have driven it end to end and in the coach as well. You can do it and yes you do have to look and hug the middle at a few locations.

Personally, I like to stay in the Maggie Valley/Waynesville area. It's convenient to the BRP, and Smokey Mountain Park, Asheville and the Cataloochie Valley portion of the park. I stay at the Winngrey Campground, but, some people seem to have a problem with the management. I personally have never had an issue.

Guess you can disregard my advice to check your clearance. Terryallen you may want to tell them to update the official site because according to them the the lowest is 10.6 not 11.1 (plus/minus 6" for expansion). And by all means don't worry about checking your clearance, Veebyea says you will be ok.

We will be at Campfire lodgings at the end of May looking forward to the Biltmore. We have toured different areas of the Blue Ridge parkway before. We left the fiver at the campground and used the TV to sight see. This will be our first time staying in Ashville.

Bad info. We have done most of theBRP with our 12' 6" spec 5er. The roof is still on it.

Twin Creeks is a good choice it's where we stay. Very convenient to almost everything, and the trolley to town and the cdraft loop not cheap but worth the price. You might want to get a reservation for the main tour at Biltmore especially if you go on a weekend.

I never had a problem on the BRP. But the access roads to the play. Can be restricted and tricky. Stayed at KOA West in Ashville. Good people. Biltmore is quite $$ but if you go stop at the winery (free) for a tasting :-)
