For a really special overnight accommodation, check out Oak Alley Plantation located about half way between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. This is well located to visit many of the plantations along the Mississippi river, plus it is really beautiful place.
In my opinion, I would avoid staying in Donaldsonville.
