Big Bend of the Colorado has very little shade and isn't quite up to standards yet, but they're working on it. I don't think you'll get quite the "feel" for Nevada visiting the Laughlin area. That said, Big Bend charges $9/day entrance fee, $20/day camping fee, and $10/day for hookups....total - $39/day. We stayed at the Riverside, upper level, overlooking the City/River for $16/day with full hookups and a free shuttle to the city below.
I agree, we did not like the AVI/KOA and my suggestion is to take I-40 W to US 93 N to NV68 W to Laughlin. Staying on I-40 to Needles then taking Needles Hwy north is dips and a mega crappy road. When traveling Hwy 68 through Golden Valley, use caution..the speed limit is 55mph and they mean 55mph...think speed trap.....
From Laughlin, take 163 West to 95 North and visit Hoover Dam and Las Vegas. Valley of the Fire State Park is just north of Vegas and very beautiful. May could be warm, so plan accordingly. Enjoy your trip....Dennis
