Sydney Australia exploration ideas-- no RV

We will be going to Sydney Australia in mid-November and will have a couple of weeks to explore. We are thinking about renting a car and just getting out and driving around for a couple of weeks, then head back to Sydney for a couple of days to take in the sights in town before we fly back to the US.
Any thoughts on places to check out ? We've never been there, so looking for ideas.... thanks
  • Bondi Beach and a steak sandwich with a large foster larger draft beer in a Australian Pub.
  • A foot tour of The Rocks, along Sydney Harbour, is an educational tour of buildings first built in Australia.

Real Australians say that Fosters Beer is for export only, the real beer of Australia is Victoria Bitters, or "VB" as the locals call it, when ordering. :B

  • Have lunch at Doyles on the Beach at Watson's Bay. Have the John Dory.
Take the ferry there, and walk to the South Head.

Most Visitors go the Central Business District and some seaside older suburbs i.e Bondi Beach. That is NOT Sydney. Sydney is so spread out, 70 miles to the South and 60 miles to the west it is hard to keep track of, even for a Sydneysider like myself. There are suburbs I have never heard of, new buildings and renovations happening all the time.
Officially the Centre of Sydney is Parramatta about 18 miles from the Harbour and that centre is slowly moving west. Parramatta is the second CBD of Sydney, followed by North Sydney and Chatswood.
  • We rented a car in Melbourne and stayed in Australia for 2 months ending in Cairns. We loved Sydney but after our arrival, we never got in the car for 9 days except for a one day trip to Bondi Beach. We stayed in an apartment very close to a bus stop and took public transportation. There is so much to see and do in the harbor area that you can at least take three days for that area alone. The ferry transportation is wonderful. I would only rent the car for the days you actually need it, not for the entire time.

Thanks for the ideas.... we do not plan to spend much time right in Sydney ( other than maybe a couple days before we fly back) and prefer to explore the countryside.
  • The Blue Mountains is a really beautiful area for a day trip.
