tags on fifth wheel in storage

If I have a fifth wheel trailer that is kept in a rv park in Florida and used for 4 months and then placed in storage does it need to have tags on it? The reason I ask is I do not have a truck to tow it back to Delaware every 2 years for inspection and tag renewal.
  • If located in Florida and not validly tagged as a vehicle it becomes subject to Tangible Personal Property Tax (annual tax return required). You are not supposed to do this, Florida would rather have the vehicle registration fee.

In some counties an assessor might try to tag it as a mobile home (which might be less expensive than tagging it as a vehicle) but that is stretching the law to move the revenue from the state to local government.

If you put it on land you own, put it on blocks, hook up to utilities, it can become real estate. It will then be taxed as such, locally.

It might be useful to tag it in Florida, rather than Delaware, since you can handle tag renewals on-line. When my brother snow-birded sticks and bricks between Michigan and Florida he registered his Florida vehicles in Florida, his Michigan vehicles in Michigan (his domicile).

But this doesn't solve all problems. I'm still trying to work out how to get some things in Florida through probate because Florida did not accept the Michigan will rolling all property into a trust.
  • In Fl it must be tagged ! Put a Florida tag on it , it will be cheaper than your home state and no inspection !
  • It used to be in Illinois that you only had a short period of time to register your vehicle once the title was changed over, and they didn't care if it was sitting in your yard not being driven or what.

I would check with Florida as has already been said. We currently have an RV and truck registered in Illinois and are getting ready to have 2 cars registered in Florida.
  • When it comes time to sell it, give it away or just dispose of it, current registration for your fifth wheel will make things much easier (and may be absolutely required).

And don't forget - it may not be you who will be trying to sell the unit; it may be your widowed spouse or executor.

Does the rig ever travel on public roads? If so, the person doing the pulling I would think would like to be legal in case they get pulled over.

Also the pulling car insurance may not cover it in case of an accident since it is not legal. Something that should be discussed with the insurer prior to an accident.
  • Tags are a way of local governments finding vesicles for personal property taxes in most states. Here at the park we are in, in Florida: All stored RV's and even utility trailers have to be registered in your home state or if it never leaves then you must register it here in Florida. Check your park manager to see how the park where you are handles it.
  • You should ask the state of Florida. I live in Washington State and my insurance company only needed to know the VIN of my 5th wheel to insure it. As far as I can tell from my policy, the company doesn't care if it is registered (has a tag).

Things could be different in Florida, but I don't see why anyone should have to maintain tags on a 5th wheel that never goes on the road.
  • Is it insured... if so it has to have a tag.
is it financed.... if so it must be insured.
If you don't need insurance, it don't need a tag.

And your storage place. many ( ours included) require that rigs be properly licensed.
