Texas in January

Fredericksburg in the Hill Country. Mind, the temperatures depend on....the weather patterns. Winters here are temperate. Light freeze once in awhile. Days can be 50-upper 60s. Clear skies and sunny a lot of the time. But it's January and Texas Hill Country...you could see a dusting of snow (no worries..gone by noon. Could also get ice storm....it all depends on Mother Nature.

Things to see: Nimitz Museum, Museum of Pacific War (2 days!), Lyndon Johnson's ranch and western White House (way cool! Including his AF 1 Lockheed presidential aircraft), Luckenbach (where everyone is somebody), pant load of winerys, all kinds of cool stores and shops in town, wild Seed Farm and Store. German food. Don't think the Texas Ranger museum is open yet. Ft. Martin Scott. Lady Bird Johnson park in Johnson City.

Scenic drives to Blanco, Willow Loop (sorry...you are 4 months early for Bluebonnets), Lost Maples Park. Enchanted Rock. Bat Cave. The drive from Kerville to Medina (apple pie!) and on west to Utopia and looping back to Kerrville is interesting but you need to check the road limits...it is hilly, narrow and twisty.

Bandera, the Cowboy Capitol. Old town flavor. Shops and eats.

Kerrville... 8 miles south on Rt. 173 is Camp Verde store and resteraunt. Very good food and interesting shopping in the store. Camp Verde was an 1840s Army Post and the home of the Camel Corps. It's near the site of the Suttler's store that served the post and is right next to Verde Creek...a beautiful location with creek and giant trees in the park.

There's about 25 or so old Texas Rangers buried in a cemetary in Center Point... Seemed to be a thing back in the day.

Several RV parks in and near F'burg and Kerrville (Guadalupe is nicest here in town)

Boerne is 35 miles south. Shopping and food (Hungry Horse)

San Antonio is about 70 miles away. Alamo & River Walk & Mission Tour. Austin is about 2 hrs east....Zilker Gardens. Music and weirdness.

Winters on average are temperate. But it may be very cold, or be really really nice in any part of Texas. We live just north of the DFW area. Any given day in Dec/Jan/Feb may be in the 50's/60's, even 70's. Or it may be 15/20 degrees with ice and/or snow. Two years ago we had a major ice storm in mid December breaking trees and power poles and shutting down highways.

I have hunted in the hill country near Fredericksburg every year since 1969. In past Novembers I have hunted in shirt sleeve weather. And I have hunted in freezing weather with ice and snow. In past Decembers I have hunted in 60 degree temps. And I have hunted in as cold as 12 degree temps.

No way of knowing more than a few days in advance what the weather will be. And it is not unusual for it to be 65 one day, 25 two days later, and 65 again a few days after that. And likely followed by cold again shortly after.

The hill country has some of the most scenic areas in Texas.

Can y'all move Hill Country about 300 miles west so I can get there in an easy days drive?

Can you swing more time for your trip? I'd suggest as far south as Rockport for decent weather in Texas.

How about Alabama?....Gulf Shores has decent weather and a very nice beach for walking.

Several full-timers I've spoken with who winter in Texas say to stay south of I-10 to avoid the cold. I've lived in Amarillo, Fort Worth and San Antonio - avoid the first two in the winter... San Antonio is better, but can still get chilly (of course, nothing like Missouri).

We normally have warm weather all winter in the Rio Grande Valley. Plenty of places to stay. Don't need a reservation. Pick a spot and take time to look around.

We are in Rockport, TX and most RV parks are almost full and completely reserved for the Jan/Feb time frame. Right now the weather is just wonderful! You would need to call around to the various RV Parks to see if there had been any cancelations. The RGV has allot of openings from what we hear.

Going to be near or at 80 today and tomorrow here in San Antonio. If you go further south to the Valley you will find very mild temperatures all Winter. We can have a couple of weeks of chilly (for us) weather here. Generally it is the same weather as you would find in the Jacksonville/Orlando areas minus the humidity most days.

You might want to check out Lake Corpus Christi state park it is about 45 minutes out of Corpus.

In Corpus Christi The aircraft carrier Lexington is now a floating Museum you can tour and the State Aquarium next door to the Lexington is also nice.

Padre Island National seashore is also not far from there.

Great fishing around the Corpus and Rockport area also!

One loop of this state park has 50 amp and sewer hookups. Nice lake facilities, and evidently a popular stop for birders. We stayed there for the first time last month and loved it.
