Texas wind

I don't think the texas coastal wind is anything to really get your attention. it IS regular...blowing out to sea at a.m. and inland at p.m.
now West texas is another story, across I 10 and I 20 and even up in the Panhandle on I 40. these winds are usually cross winds, so folks with trailers or MHs tend to notice them.

We've camped in Corpus Christi and did not experience any wind issues. Now the winter we spent in Harlingen was another story...breezy every day, all day. The 6 weeks we stayed at Tropic Winds, aptly named, we never had the awnings out. Couldn't if you wanted to, breezy all day. Actually, the breeze made the temps enjoyable, just be aware, depending on location, there are windy locations. Nice place to spend the winter - no snow shovels to be seen. The only problem with south Texas is it takes a while to get there - - from New England...

Left Corpus Christi middle of the afternoon and headed north on !-37. About 75 miles north of CC there is a rest stop we spent the night in waiting for the winds to die down. The rest area was full of campers and trucks doing the same......it can happen.

The streets at Tropic Winds are 1/10 of a mile long. One day, I literally "rode the wind" from one end to the other. Pedaling and pushing back to my starting point was enough to exhaust me for the rest of the day. In addition to no awnings, you also have no picnic tables, ergo no eating outside -- and definitely forget about relaxing outside with a book in one hand and a beer in the other. Those days will be few and far between.

The winter we went to Texas wasn't all bad (excessive wind). The last month of
that winter was great -- We left the RGV early and went to SW Florida!

I would call it more of a pleasant breeze most of the time.

I believe coastal wind is the same when measured at the international standard of 10 meters above the ground in an open area. What changes is when you go inland. In south Texas it is flat with very little tall vegetation to block the wind. So 18 MPH feels pretty windy. The same wind in an area of tall trees will feel like less because the trees, hills, houses, etc block much of it.

You will see many more RV awnings out in Florida then you will ever see in Texas. You simple do not leave your awning out, then go for a long walk unless you have your awning well anchored in Texas.

Many on this forum have places in Texas that they have improved upon to limit the winds effect on them. As a true mobile RV'er you will not have that option. If the RV site you get assign to places your awning on the windy side of the rig, then you're going to know you're in Texas and not Florida. Sometimes just opening the door of the rig can be a challenge in some areas/parks along the Texas coast.

Don't be scared off, give it a try. The wind is not always that bad, but it does have it's days so be prepared.

If you are right on the Gulf like Corpus or South Padre Island yes it can be windy I winter inland about 50 miles at Alamo and the wind has not been a problem some days you have some wind and a lot of times very little just like here in IL. I usually have my awning out about 75% of the time.
