We drove to Thompson, then took the train to Churchill. It was around the first of October. Although too early for peak "polar bear season", we did see some on a polar-bear-watching tour. Had fun shopping for native-made items. Bought a pair of the warmest mocasins (custom made) that I have ever owned -- still wear them on cold days. Had a tasty fish dinner of locally-caught pike.
Too cloudy for northern lights in Churchhill, but we drove west to Flin Flon, where there was a fine display.
Saw lots of fall color on the drive there and back. Several moose sightings.
Those moccasins are known by the first nations people as ' Kamics' Properly made they use seal hide, fur in, with caribou hide soles treated with bear fat for waterproofing. . For extreme cold a liner of musk oxen felt . We have them, made by the people of Pangnirtung, NWT.
Manitoba has much to offer beyond the lakes and nature, prime amongst that is the multiculturalism exhibited at 'Folklorama' What a learning experience about other peoples and their ways.
